Getaria ( Basque , Spanish Guetaria ) is a port city in the province of Gipuzkoa (Spanish Guipúzcoa ) in the Spanish Autonomous Region of the Basque Country . It is located about 20 km west of San Sebastián on the Bay of Biscay .
history
The area around Getaria is first mentioned through maps of the Greeks and Romans. Getaria was founded in 1209 by King Alfonso VIII of Castile . In 1397 the Brotherhood of Gipuzkoa was founded in the Church of San Salvador in Getaria.
The parish church from the 12th century and a monument commemorating the completion of the first circumnavigation of the world by Juan Sebastián de Elcano are remarkable . The names of the seamen involved are engraved on the base of the monument. A "Hans from Aachen" is also mentioned.
The harbor is protected by a prominent peninsula that ends in the high cliffs of Mont San Anton (a former island). The Basques set out from this port as early as the 14th century for fishing and whaling in Newfoundland , Greenland and Iceland . In 1638 a naval battle between the Spanish and French navies took place off Getaria .
economy
In addition to tourism, fishing and viticulture are the town's main industries. In and around Getaria, 17 wineries on 170 hectares produce around 10,000 hectoliters of Txakoli , a characteristic wine of the Basque coast.
