Josepha "Pepita" Embil Echániz (born February 28, 1918 in Getaria ; † August 28, 1994 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish zarzuela singer and the mother of the opera tenor Plácido Domingo .

Life

After attending the conservatory, the daughter of an organist first appeared as a concert singer and gave a concert in the Salle Pleyel in Paris as early as 1937 . In the same year she became a member of Gabriel Olaizola's vocal ensemble Eresoinka . In 1940 she began her career as a zarzuela singer in Spain with an appearance in the Zarzuela Sor Navarra by Federico Moreno Torroba at the side of Plácido Domingo Ferrer , her future husband. She then had success in Madrid in Pablo Sorozábal's Black el payso and Don Manolito .

In 1948 she went on a tour of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela with Plácido Domingo Ferrer and the composer Federico Moreno Torroba. The couple then settled in Mexico and founded the Domingo-Embil Company there . In addition, Embil, who became famous as La Reina de la Zarzuela , continued to give concert evenings. In 1988 she was honored at Teatro Zarzuela Madrid with a performance of Sorozábal's La chulapona . In the last years of her life, she hosted the program Antología de la Zarzuela on Mexican television .
