Location of the city | ||
Errenteria (Basque, Spanish Rentería ) is a town with 39,471 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Spanish autonomous province of Gipuzkoa in the valley of Oiartzun . It is about 10 km from the French border. In 1320 it was founded under the name Villanueva d'Oiarso . Nearby are the Neolithic caves and dolmens of Aitzbitarte.
history
The city experienced a heyday from the 15th to the 17th century with the boom in Spanish seafaring. Numerous historic buildings date from this phase, including a. the monastery of Santa Maria Magdalena and the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , the town hall and many residential buildings. Fort San Marco was built in 1888.
The region was industrialized in the 19th century. Numerous companies in the iron and non-ferrous metal processing, the paper and textile industry and other industries settled in the city, which led to heavy pollution from sewage. In the 1960s and 1970s, the city was expanded to include new building districts and its population doubled to over 45,000 through immigration. In the last two decades the resident population has decreased again. The de-industrialization of the last decades and numerous renovation and greening measures led to an improvement in the cityscape and a reduction in environmental pollution.
In 2005, the technical vocational and advanced training center TKNIKA (Center for Innovation in Vocational Training and Lifelong Learning) was founded in Errenteria as an institution of the Basque Ministry of Education. Start-ups can use the machines and laboratories for their innovation projects.
