Dane Brekken "Brek" Shea (born February 28, 1990 in College Station , Texas ) is an American football player . The defender has been playing for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer since early 2019 .

The versatile Shea, who can play in both defensive and offensive positions, was appointed to the US national team in 2008 and 2010 , and made his first international appearance on October 12, 2010 in a friendly against Colombia .

Career

Started his career in Texas

After Shea gained his first soccer experience at Brazos Christian School in Bryan, Texas , he went to Bryan High School , where he was also active on the school soccer team. After his high school career, he played for Texans FC , which is part of the Dallas Texans Soccer Club , which in turn is one of the most successful training clubs in the USA. With the team there, he won the state championship four times in a row and came to the Bradenton Academy around the same time he came to Texans FC . He was finally active from 2005 to 2007 at the funding institution of the US U-17 national team, which has existed since 1999. Then he moved to England in October 2007 , where he did a trial training with the Bolton Wanderers . This should not be his only experience with English football, because the following year other talent scouts, including from Manchester United and Fulham FC , made their way to the United States to see the midfield talent . After leaving Texans FC in 2008, Shea joined the Generation Adidas joint venture at the beginning of 2008 .

As 2nd pick for FC Dallas

Around the same time, Shea was drafted via the MLS SuperDraft 2008 in the first round as the second pick behind Chance Myers to FC Dallas . This transfer was considered quite a surprise, as the MLS SuperDraft often preferred players from a university soccer team. After he sat on the bench for the first time in a league game for FC Dallas on March 30, 2008, but was not used, he was on April 20 in another game against CD Chivas USA for the first time in Major League Soccer used. In the 2-0 away win he was substituted on for Blake Wagner in the 86th minute and only four minutes later saw the yellow card for foul play . After another brief use on June 1, 2008 in the 1: 2 defeat against the Colorado Rapids Shea sat in another three league games of his team without use on the bench. He spent the rest of the season in the club's reserve team playing in the now defunct MLS Reserve Division or had to pause due to meniscus surgery in his right knee. In the 2009 game year , the trained midfielder was used more often, but still could not muster the ambitions to become a regular player and so only made four appearances over the entire game. In total, he was used in 19 championship games in 2009, in which he gave four assists for his teammates. The first assist he made on June 7, 2009 in the 2-2 home draw against the San José Earthquakes , when he prepared Kenny Cooper's goal for the 2-2 final. As in the previous season, things didn't go particularly well for FC Dallas in the 2009 regular season . However, this should change in Major League Soccer 2010 , when he finished the season with the team in third place in the Western Conference . Shea was used in 25 championship games, in which he acted very aggressively, scored five goals and prepared another four for his teammates. He made his first professional league goal on May 15, 2010 against the still very young club Philadelphia Union , when he scored the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the game to the later 1-1 final score. In the 2011 game year , Shea was able to significantly expand his performance as an offensive player and also quickly became a regular player in the attacking line of his club. In 22 games played so far (as of August 2, 2011), he has scored nine goals, with which he ranks third on the league-wide scorers list behind Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan (eleven goals each), as well as one assist.

Stoke City

On January 31, 2013 Shea moved abroad and signed in Europe with Stoke City Football Club from the English Premier League , where he signed a contract until the end of the 2016/17 season. He made his first league game for the new club on February 23 of the same year when he was substituted on against Fulham FC in the 24th minute.

Return to the MLS

On December 19, 2014, Shea moved back to the MLS at Orlando City . After two seasons he signed the Vancouver Whitecaps .

At the end of the 2018 season, Shea was released from the Whitecaps and signed by Atlanta United.

International

Shea gained his first international experience in the US U-17 national team , for which he was used for the first time in official internationals in 2006. He made his (albeit unofficial) debut for the U-17 national team in February 2006 when he was on the pitch from the start in a 1-1 draw against the U-21 national team of Trinidad and Tobago . He finally scored his first official goal for the US U-17s on May 14, 2006, when he scored the winning goal to 2-1 over his colleagues from Jamaica . In the year after his actual national team debut, Shea was appointed to the 21-man squad that took part in the 2007 U-17 World Cup in South Korea . There he was substituted on for Fuad Ibrahim in the group game against Tajikistan in the 71st minute of the game . The game against the age colleagues from Tajikistan, which was the only one for Shea in this World Cup finals, was lost 3: 4 in the end. After more than 19 international matches, Shea was used in the U-18 and U-20 teams in the same year.

After a rather insignificant time in the U-18 national team, Shea was used for the U-20 for the first time in the training camps of the U-20 national team in the preparatory games for the 2007 Junior World Cup in Canada . However, he only achieved his greatest success with the team in 2009, when he took part in the 2009 Junior World Cup in Egypt . Before that, he and the team, of which he was briefly captain, took part in the 2008 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland . The team qualified for the world championship by finishing second at the 2009 CONCACAF Junior Championship , in which Shea also took part. At the World Cup finals in Egypt Shea was finally used in all three group games of his team, but retired with the team.

After he had traveled to France to the Toulon tournament in France with the U-23 national team of the USA in 2008, where he also played, he was also appointed to the US senior team for the first time in the same year . This happened in the course of a qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup , when national coach Bob Bradley was appointed at short notice in June 2008 in the 19-man squad that was to play against Barbados in the second qualifying round . In the game, which took place just a week after the US record win (8-0) in the first leg against Barbados, Shea was ultimately not used and had to let other players go first. In the following year, the all-rounder finished his time in the US U-20 national team with four goals from twelve international matches. After that, it was not until October 2010 that Shea was called up again for the senior team. He was brought into the national team by national coach Bob Bradley for two friendly matches against Poland and Colombia . After he had not played against Poland, he made his senior national team debut on October 12, 2010 in a friendly international match against Colombia . In the game, which ended in a goalless draw and in which Eric Lichaj , another American made his national team debut, Shea played from the start and was replaced by Clint Dempsey at half-time . With his commitment, Shea is the first American football player born in the 1990s to play for the US national team. In 2013, he won the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the United States national soccer team , the North and Central American equivalent of the European soccer championship , after beating Panama in the final . Here Shea scored the winning goal to make it 1-0. In May 2014 Jürgen Klinsmann did not nominate him for the provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup .
