Adolph Joseph "AJ" DeLaGarza (born November 4, 1987 in Bryans Road , Maryland ) is an American football player on the position of defender . He has been playing at Inter Miami in Major League Soccer since 2020 and is a Guamian national player .

Career

Youth and college

DeLaGarza took part in the Danone Nations Cup in France with the U-12 of DC United in 1999 . He also played on the school's soccer team at Indian Head High School.

At the University of Maryland , he then played for the college soccer team , the Maryland Terrapins . With the Terrapins he was able to win the College Cup, the national university championship in football, in 2005 and 2008. He received several honors for his achievements at college and was named Co-Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2008. After completing the four years in college, he decided to switch to MLS.

Major League Soccer

At the MLS SuperDraft 2009 he was selected by the LA Galaxy , in the second round and in 19th place overall. On March 22, 2009 he made his debut in the MLS in the first game of the season against DC United. With Sean Franklin's injury, he even moved into the starting line-up and started in 16 consecutive games. In the further course of the season he played a total of 22 games and scored one goal before injuring himself. In the following season he did not play as often and at least scored his second goal in the MLS.

For the 2017 season, DeLaGarza moved within the MLS to Houston Dynamo . In addition to 57 MLS appearances, he was also used 4 times in the 2018 season in the farm team , the Rio Grande Valley Toros , in the USL Championship .

For season 2020 DeLaGarza moved to the new MLS franchise Inter Miami .

National team

On January 21, 2012, DeLaGarza made his debut for the United States national football team in a friendly against Venezuela.

Because he only played two friendlies for the USA, he was also eligible to play for the Guamian national soccer team . On August 27, 2013, he announced that he wanted to play for the USA .
