In 2011 he made his debut for the national team of his home country .

Career

Career start and time at Cal State Northridge and the Quakes

Sean Franklin, born in 1985 in Panorama City , a district of Los Angeles, began his active football career at a young age. After he was only active as a hobby at first, he also played during his high school time at Highland High School in Palmdale , California . There he mostly trained under the regionally respected youth coach Danny Young and was also a three-time letter winner. In addition, he was named Golden League's Most Valuable Player in his senior year and made it to the All-Area-First-Team in 2003 after winning the Golden League championship with his team . He also led his team as captain in his senior year . After high school, the three-time letterman moved to California State University, Northridge , where his father was already active as a football player in the 1970s . There he quickly advanced to become one of the most successful defensive players in the history of the university's football team. After a year as a red shirt , he was only one of two players on the team in the following year, who were used in all 19 games of the season, only to be brought into the "All- Big-West-Conference- Second Team". In the same year he was also brought into the U-20 selection of the USA for the first time, in which he was not used. As a sophomore , he brought his best season performance at the university when he was used in 21 games and made six assists for his teammates after he had not succeeded once in the preseason. At the end of the season he was also awarded for his achievements with the election to the “All- Big-West-Conference- First-Team” and the election to the “All-Far-West-Region-Third-Team”.

In 2006 he was again in action as a regular member of the team and once again played in all 19 championship games. He got another four assists for his teammates and he was once again voted into the “All- Big-West-Conference- First Team”. He also made it into the "All-Far-West-Region-Second-Team" at the end of this year and also scored his first goal as a player in the Northridge Matadors , as the sports department at Cal State Northridge is called. This he succeeded on October 11, 2006 in a 4-1 win over the UC Irvine soccer team . In his free time at university, he spent much of his time with the San Fernando Valley Quakes in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), which is to be regarded as fourth class . He did this in the following year 2007, when he made it into the play-offs for the first time in the club's history, but broke his arm in the semifinals against the BYU Cougars , a university football team that played in the fourth-highest division, and so on had to end the season prematurely due to injury. Due to this injury, he also missed a large part of his college season, in which he only returned in the last eight games of the season and also scored his second and last goal for the Northridge Matadors in a 2-3 loss to UC Santa Barbara . By the time he left university, he had made a total of 65 championship appearances, ten assists and two goals, as well as 23 championship appearances and four hits with the Quakes in the fourth division.

Draft to Los Angeles Galaxy

In early 2008, after graduating from Cal State Northridge, Franklin was drafted as the best right full-back of the entire draft via the MLS SuperDraft 2008 in the first round as the fourth pick to Los Angeles Galaxy . This year he was one of six players who found their way to Los Angeles Galaxy via the MLS SuperDraft. After he was already on the bench in the season opening game of Galaxy and in the subsequent first home game of Galaxy in the new season was on the field for the first time, he quickly established himself in the team. After his professional debut on April 3, 2008 against the San José Earthquakes , when he played through the full game in central defense , he was used in another 26 games by the end of the season. The trained right full-back spent the majority of the game year 2008 in the position of a central defender and only had to miss two championship games in July due to a knee injury. In addition, he succeeded in this season also his first assist at Galaxy when he was the template for a goal scored by Edson Buddle in the 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids on October 12, 2008. At the end of the season he was named Los Angeles Galaxy Best Defender and also received the MLS Rookie of the Year Award for the best rookie player in the entire league.

In 2009 he dropped out for several months due to an operation on his torn right Achilles tendon and only slowly returned to regular play afterwards. By the end of the season, he had only made 13 championship appearances in which, however, he was on the pitch in all of them from the start. This season he managed to assist again and was also a member of the team when it secured the championship title in the regular season in the “Western Conference” and thus paved the way for the final of the MLS Cup in 2009. Franklin, who was used in all four play-off games of his team, was also one of the key players in the team, which only lost to Real Salt Lake on penalties in the play-off final, the annual MLS Cup . The subsequent Major League Soccer 2010 went a little better for Franklin personally than the previous one. So he was once again a regular in the defense line of the team and brought it to a total of 25 championship appearances, of which he played in 24 from the start. He also made six assists for his teammates this season. With Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the season he again ranked first in the "Western Conference" and qualified for the play-off again without any problems. In these, Franklin started in all three matches of his team, which however clearly lost 3-0 in the semifinals against FC Dallas and had to be eliminated.

The way to the senior national team

After he was first appointed back in 2004 in the U-20 national team of his home country, he was only about three years later in 2007 his debut for the junior selection of the USA as he prepares for an international youth tournament in South Korea once again was brought into the squad. There he finally made his team debut against the U-20 selection of Egypt when he played from the start and was replaced by Hunter Freeman from the 65th minute on and also acted as one of the top performers in this game. About a month earlier, Franklin was brought into the US U-23 squad, where he made his debut at the Kirin Challenge Cup against Japan's U-22 team. Both games, in the U-20 and U-23 selection, were his only ones in a junior national team in his career. Even before his actual debut in the senior national team of the United States , Franklin was brought up a few times in their squad, where he mostly only trained, but had no real prospects of being used. He received his first call-up in November 2008 for the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Guatemala scheduled for that month . Although he trained with the USA national team, he was not in their squad on match day and therefore had to take a seat in the stands. Furthermore, Franklin was brought into the national team of the United States for the winter training camp in January 2009. Even after that, however, there was never enough for a mission, which was partly due to the fact that he had to leave the camp early due to an injury.

It wasn't until two years later that he would have the chance to play in the US national team again. So in coach Bob Bradley brought back for the winter training camp 2011 in the national team, for which he made his debut on January 22, 2011 in the friendly against Chile (1: 1), when he was used over the entire game. A total of six other US-Americans made their team debut that day in addition to Sean Franklin with Chris Wondolowski , Zach Loyd , Jeff Larentowicz , Sean Johnson , Anthony Wallace and Eric Alexander .

Move to DC United

At the end of the 2013 season, Franklin's contract was not renewed. So he got into the 2013 MLS Re-Entry Draft, where he was selected by DC United . A little later he signed a contract there.
