Edson Michael Buddle (born May 21, 1981 in New Rochelle , New York ) is an American football player in the position of a striker .

Career

youth

Born and raised in the US state of New York, Buddle began his active career as a football player with the youth football club FC Westchester in Westchester County in southeast New York. There he was active from 1993 to 1995 and then came, among other things, for the soccer team of Port Chester High School in Port Chester in his home county. After his time in high school, Buddle played a season for the men's soccer team at State Fair Community College in Sedalia , Missouri, in 1999 . With the local team he won, among other things, the NJCAA National Championship , with Buddle scoring the decisive goal in the final in a 3-2 victory over Pima Community College .

From the Long Island Rough Riders to the MLS

After a successful season at college, the striker came to the Long Island Rough Riders in 2000 , who at that time still had their game operations in the second-rate A-League, later the USL First Division . He made his professional debut on April 26, 2000 in a 2-1 home win over the Boston Bulldogs , when he came on in the 54th minute of the game and scored his first professional goal in the 63rd minute, taking the 1-0 lead Prepared his team’s victory. For the team he appeared in 26 league games, scoring eleven goals and giving four assists. With the team he won the Northeast Conference by one point over the Rochester Raging Rhinos and 17 points over the third-placed, Toronto Lynx . With his eleven goals, he became the team's top scorer and, thanks to his good performance and goals, was a finalist for receiving the A-League Rookie of the Year award .

In 2001, Buddle came through the Generation Adidas joint venture , which at that time was still called Project-40 , and the MLS SuperDraft 2001 as the 27th pick in the third round for the MLS franchise Columbus Crew . The then 19-year-old made his debut in the top North American division on April 7, 2001 and made 17 games and three goals in his first season. He scored his first MLS goal on his third mission, just five days before his 20th birthday, on May 16, 2001 against New England Revolution . From the 2002 season, Buddle began to establish itself as one of the most outstanding young players in the league, alongside players like Taylor Twellman , Kyle Martino , Brad Davis and Justin Mapp . With the crew, he was used in 21 games this season, in which he scored nine goals and made five assists. With the team he secured the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 2002, where the team Buddles later club Los Angeles Galaxy defeated 1-0 in the final.

Thrown off track by an Achilles tendonitis , he was used in only 20 championship games in 2003 , although he showed good offensive performance and scored ten goals in total and prepared four goals for his teammates. In the league, too , things went very badly for the Columbus , Ohio franchise . The team in the Eastern Conference only reached fifth and last place in the conference. In the 2003 CONCACAF Champions' Cup , Buddle's goal threat was also palpable, as he scored four of the six goals his team scored during the tournament. Due to an injury-related loss in the 2004 game year , Buddle was able to live up to his regular position on the offensive of Columbus Crew and came up with eleven goals and two assists in 24 missions. Overall, he was voted MLS Player of the Week twice this season , but once for the four goals he scored in the 4-2 win over the New York Red Bulls on September 18, 2004. He also helped his team to first place in the Eastern Conference and to win the MLS Supporters' Shield , which was mainly due to the series of 18 undefeated championship games in a row. This series has been an unbroken league record to date (2010).

In the 2005 season , Buddle continued to perform well in the attack line of Columbus Crew and was after the departure of Brian McBride after the 2004 season, the crew's top scorer in 2005, scoring nine goals in 23 appearances and again giving two assists . After such a good previous season, the team under the leadership of Greg Andrulis and interim coach Robert Warzycha again only reached the last place in the table in the Eastern Conference, which was expanded to six franchises . In total, he missed a month of gaming practice when he was arrested by Columbus Police for refusing to take a breathalyzer test and banned from five games for violating the MLS Drug Abuse Ordinance. According to a survey, Buddle had 14 traffic violations in the time since he switched to Columbus Crew .

Moved to the New York Red Bulls and made a flying visit to Toronto FC

Before the 2006 game year , Buddle moved in return for Eddie Gaven and Chris Leitch within the Conference to the New York Red Bulls , which from this season no longer appeared under the name MetroStars as before . There he was on the side of Youri Djorkaeff , Amado Guevara or John Wolyniec in 28 championship games and scored six goals and provided three assists. The striker made only a brief appearance at Toronto FC in 2007 when he was preferred to Tim Reagan , who was reserved by the Canadian franchise in the 2006 MLS Expansion Draft , but was not accepted. After a total of only ten league appearances and two assists for the team from the north, Buddle made another move within Major League Soccer at the end of the season.

Successful time at LA Galaxy

This time he went to the West Coast , where he was transferred to Los Angeles Galaxy in mid-June 2007 in return for Tyronne Marshall . In his first game against Real Salt Lake on June 17, 2007, he scored his first goal for the new club. His second goal on his second appearance made him the first Galaxy player since Diego Serna in 2003 to score in the first two games of the season. After the Achilles tendon injury that had plagued him since 2003 threw him back in July and early August, he returned to the Carson franchise in mid-August 2008 . Furthermore, Buddle came to two appearances in the reserve team of LA Galaxy and three appearances in the North American SuperLiga , in which Los Angeles was only eliminated in the final against CF Pachuca on penalties with 3: 4. In the MLS he scored five goals in 16 missions.

Before the 2008 season , Buddle was not traded as a regular in the LA Galaxy attack, as the franchise had three strong strikers in the team with Carlos Ruiz , Alan Gordon and especially Landon Donovan . Buddle should only be used if Ruiz and Donovan were given an exemption for international matches for their respective national teams. Mainly due to Ruiz's injury, Buddle mainly took over his position and came to more missions for Los Angeles Galaxy. The committed striker played in 27 championship games throughout the season, scoring 15 goals, ranking third on the Major League Soccer goalscorer list behind Kenny Cooper (18 goals) and his teammate Landon Donovan (20 goals). He also made three assists for his teammates and was used due to his good performance in the MLS All-Star Game 2009 against West Ham United . In the 3-2 win there, Buddle was used as a substitute in the second half. He was also voted MLS Player of the Week twice during the season and twice after scoring a hat trick .

With the start of the 2009 season, which was quite successful for the team , Buddle's run of success continued. He had a record of five goals in 19 championship appearances and reached first place in the final table in the Western Conference and was also a finalist in the MLS Cup 2009. Further second places this year were second place when receiving the MLS Supporters' Shield and second place in the Pan-Pacific Championship 2009 . After a sprain in his right ankle that he sustained in a friendly against AC Milan , he was out for over seven weeks and only returned to the game in mid-September. At the Major League Soccer 2010 , his scoring threat made itself felt once again. On May 14, 2010, he was the leading scorer in the MLS, practiced the most shots and the most shots on goal and scored the most decisive goals. After the league break, during the 2010 World Cup , he continued his strong performance. Buddle led the scorers list for a long time and was nominated for the MLS All-Star Game against Manchester United. On October 24th, he won the Western Conference and the MLS Supporters' Shield with the team. For his accomplishments during the 2010 season, he was voted Best Player in the Galaxies. He was also the team's most successful goalscorer and was voted “Humanitarian of the Year” because he was very involved in charitable projects of the Galaxies.

Detour to FC Ingolstadt 04 and return to the MLS

On January 10, 2011, Buddle joined the German second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 . He received a contract dated until 2013. He had scored nine goals in 31 league games before his contract was terminated on January 31, 2012. Then he returned to his old club LA Galaxy. In early 2013 he was transferred to the Colorado Rapids , for which he was active until the end of 2014. He returned to LA Galaxy again in March 2015 by the end of the year.

National team career

After he was already used for the US U-18 team, he was brought into the squad for the 2001 World Junior Cup in Argentina by German-American U-20 national coach Wolfgang Sühnholz . After he had previously played in unofficial build-up and test matches of the U-20 national team against professional football teams, he completed three international matches at the Junior World Cup, in which he scored one goal. This he succeeded on June 20, 2001 in a 4-1 victory over the Chilean U-20 national team. For his senior national team debut, Buddle finally came as a 21-year-old on March 29, 2003 in a 2-0 win in a friendly against Venezuela , when he came on in the 80th minute for his Columbus crew teammate Brian McBride . In the same year he took part with the US U-23 selection in the qualification for participation in the soccer tournament of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , whereby the team, although Buddle contributed two goals, could not qualify.

In May 2010 the national coach of the USA, Bob Bradley , took Edson Buddle into consideration and nominated him, mainly because of his good performance in the 2010 season, in the provisional 30-man squad that took part in the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa . By June 1, 2010 Bradley had to reduce the roster to 23 men. Since it was uncertain due to the failures of Charlie Davies and Brian Ching which strikers would be called up in the 23-man squad , the national coach would have had to choose between Edson Buddle and Hérculez Gómez . Ultimately, Bradley chose both players along with Jozy Altidore and Robbie Findley for the offensive division of the USA.

After Buddle was no longer in the senior national team of his home country for over seven years, he was finally used on May 25, 2010 in a 2: 4 defeat in the preparatory game against the Czech Republic in the first half and replaced by Herculez Gomez in the second round. In the game he prepared Maurice Edus 1-0 opening goal in minute 17 and injured his lip in the course of the game, which is why he had to be sewn with two stitches next to the field, but could continue to play.

In his only third international appearance on June 5, 2010, Buddle was the most outstanding player of the game in a 3-1 win in the World Cup preparation game against Australia . In the game, in which he was in action until the 78th minute, he scored the opening goal for his team in minute 4 after single-handedly with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. After the equalizer in minute 19, Buddle headed the goal for the 2-1 lead after submission by Germany legionnaire Steve Cherundolo .

Play style

Buddle is an athletic player who sees his strengths in flanking and as a goal scorer. Due to his long legs, he is often a deceptive and fast player who acts intelligently, especially in 1-on-1 situations. Furthermore, the anticipated buddle has a great understanding of the game, which is why he often only waits near the goal and acts as a dust collector. He also has a high headball strength, which is mainly due to his size and robust physique.

family

Edson Buddle was born to play football. His Jamaican father Winston Buddle (* approx. 1957) was an active soccer player who played for Seba United FC in his home country and emigrated to the USA after brief stints in Greece and Cyprus . Winston Buddle currently heads the Golden Touch Soccer training center in New Rochelle and is considered one of the best youth coaches in the Tri-State region . He has also coached several high school and adult soccer teams , as well as the head coach of the national team of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . It was also Winston Buddle who chose the name for his son and named him after the Brazilian football legend Pelé (birth name: Edson Arantes do Nascimento ). Since mid-January 2007, Buddle has been in a relationship with a Rutgers graduate.
