Charles "Charlie" Desmond Davies (born June 25, 1986 in Manchester , New Hampshire ) is a retired American football player on the position of a striker .

He is currently under contract with Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer .

Davie's father Kofi, who is active as a soccer player himself, comes from Gambia, so he also has Gambian citizenship according to Gambian law.

Career

Youth and amateur football

Davies began his active football career in 2001 at Brooks School in North Andover , Massachusetts . In high school, he set a number of records, such as the most goals scored in a high school period (101 hits). He also scored 29 goals in his junior year and 30 goals in his senior year, which was also a school record. He also won the ILS championship with his high school team with a perfect streak of 15 wins in 15 games. At the Brooks School he was active as a wrestler in addition to playing football , where he was also able to celebrate some successes in this sport.

After graduating in 2004, Davies joined Boston College in Newton , Massachusetts . In his freshman year he was used in 20 games, scoring nine goals and giving four assists. In 2005, his sophomore year, he was eliminated after only one game for the rest of the season after injuring his knee. At the end of his college career, Davies had a record of 24 goals and 10 assists in 37 completed games, of which he scored 15 goals in his 16 appearances in the last academic year alone. While still at Boston College, he was with the Westchester Flames in the USL Premier Development League , an amateur league that is regarded as a fourth class. For the Flames he scored six goals in nine championship appearances in 2006. Among other things, Davies was a 2006 finalist for the Hermann Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best college player.

Club career

Davies' professional career began when he decided not to quit his studies in 2007, despite the prediction of a high MLS draft pick and the possibility of a Generation Adidas contract. Davies decided to seek his luck in Europe instead of starting his professional career as an MLS player.

So it happened that he traveled to the Netherlands , completed a trial training session and two friendly matches at Ajax Amsterdam , but was not offered a contract. Since other clubs, such as Celtic Glasgow , Olympique Marseille and Hammarby IF wooed Davies, a decision followed in December 2006 when he signed a contract with Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan .

He scored his first goal for the Swedes in the UI Cup game in the first round against the Faroese club KÍ Klaksvík on June 24, 2007. Difficulties, however, caused him to achieve his first league goal. Davies' breakthrough came at the end of the 2007 season when he scored his first three league goals with a hat-trick against GAIS Gothenburg on October 28, 2007 . It was similarly successful after the league expansion in the 2008 season , where Davies scored 14 goals in 26 championship appearances and came with the team through the UI Cup and into the UEFA Cup . Due to his good performances this season, several European clubs became aware of the young American, but he decided to remain loyal to the Swedes. To date, Davies has made nine appearances and four goals in Fotbollsallsvenskan 2009 . He also scored two goals in extra time in the third round of the Svenska Cup in 2009 against Åtvidabergs FF and secured the team with a 3-2 victory in the cup competition.

In the game of the 9th round in the 2009 season, Davies was dismissed and suspended for several games after he injured his opponent from Örebro SK , Michael Almebäck , with an elbow check in the face through an aggressive style of play .

On July 10, 2009, his move to FC Sochaux in the French Ligue 1 was announced. He then made his competitive debut with the French in the second round of the current season in the 2: 3 home defeat against Girondins Bordeaux , when he replaced the Serbian international Ivan Stevanović in the second half of the game . In the same game, the American came to his first goals in the jersey of the East French; he scored both goals for his team.

After completing a ten-day trial training session at DC United in February 2011, his move to the US top division was announced on February 16, 2011. FC Sochaux will loan Davies to DC for the entire 2011 MLS season . He made his debut on March 19, 2011, where he came on in the 52nd minute of the game against the Columbus Crew . In the same game he scored two goals. After the 2011 season, DC United announced that Davies would not give a purchase option and thus Davies moved back to France.

At the end of the season he moved to Randers FC in Denmark . Before that, a transfer to the Dutch first division club AZ Alkmaar failed . On July 22, 2012, he made his debut in the Superligaen . A year later he was loaned to New England Revolution on August 8, 2013, from which he was also signed at the end of the 2013 season.

In August 2016, he moved to the Philadelphia Union.

International

After he first came to some missions in the U-18 team in his home country and won the Milk Cup with the team in 2005, he joined the U-20 national team of the USA. In the U-20 junior division, he played ten games, including being in the 2004 Milk Cup squad, but not being used there. Davies also played in the successful qualification for the Junior World Championship 2005 , the CONCACAF U-20 Cup. For the World Cup finals, however, he was deleted from the squad shortly before the start of the tournament. Davies also played in the U-23 selection. According to his own statements, he saw the U-23 national team as an opportunity to recommend himself for a professional contract. In 2008 he qualified with the U-23 for the 2008 Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing . During the Olympic Games, he came to a single use in the three preliminary round games when he was substituted in the game against Nigeria and with a header that just hit the crossbar, the USA could have advanced in the tournament.

He made his debut for the senior national team on June 2, 2007 in a 4-1 win in a friendly against China . He later took part in the 2007 Copa America with the team . He scored his first goal for the senior national team on October 15, 2008 in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in the 2-1 defeat against Trinidad and Tobago . At the Confed Cup 2009 Davies also came to some inserts and scored in the game against Egypt . With the national team he reached the final of the competition.

On May 4, 2010, the American Football Association announced that Davies would not take part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa due to his accident and his ongoing regeneration .

Others

On October 13, 2009, Davies was seriously injured in a traffic accident on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in the US state of Virginia . He broke his right shin, thigh, and left elbow and also suffered several facial fractures and a tear in the bladder. There were three people in the vehicle, one woman was killed. According to the police, Davies was not the driver. Shortly after the accident, it became known that Davies would have to take a break of between six months and a year due to his serious injuries and therefore probably not take part in the 2010 World Cup . Less than a month after the car accident, Davies was released from Washington Hospital Center on November 11, 2009 and was in a rehabilitation process through late April. On April 26, 2010 he got back into team training at FC Sochaux.

On July 30, 2016, it was announced that Davies had cancer. Because this was recognized early, he was able to recover relatively quickly.
