Maurice Edu (born April 18, 1986 in Fontana , California ) is an American football player .

Career

Club career

Edu played on the University of Maryland college team for three years and was inducted into the college all-star team in 2006 before signing up for the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as a Generation Adidas player . In the draft he was selected as the first pick by league newcomer Toronto FC . Toronto ended the first season in the MLS with the last place in the table, but Edu was named Rookie of the Year .

On August 17, 2008 it was announced that Edu was transferring to the Glasgow Rangers for a fee of £ 2.6 million . With the Rangers he received a five-year contract. He made his debut in the Scottish Premier League on September 13, 2008 in a 2-1 home win over Kilmarnock FC .

After the forced relegation of the Glasgow Rangers to the fourth-rate Scottish Football League Third Division , Maurice signed a three-year contract with Stoke City .

For the second half of the 2012/13 season he was loaned to the Turkish Süper Lig at Bursaspor . There he was used in eleven games. After the end of the second half of the season he will return to Stoke City.

On January 27, 2014, and thus at the beginning of the 2014 season of the North American Major League Soccer , Edu moved to the Philadelphia Union on loan . There he ran in 31 games for Philadelphia, in which he could score three goals. In early 2015, it was announced that Edu would receive a permanent multi-year contract with the Philadelphia Union in exchange for paying an unpublished transfer fee to Stoke City.

International

Edu has been on the US U-23 squad since 2007. In October 2007 he made his debut in the senior national team in a friendly against Switzerland . In July 2008, Edu was appointed to the 18-man squad for the Olympic Games by Olympic selection trainer Piotr Nowak .

Edu was in the squad for the 2010 World Cup and scored a goal in the game against Slovenia, which was denied by the referee.

Edu grew up in San Bernardino, California . His father, Maurice Sr., was a math teacher from Nigeria. His mother is also a teacher and is also from Nigeria. He has three sisters and one brother.
