Brian McBride (born June 19, 1972 in Arlington Heights , Illinois ) is a former American soccer player who was most recently active for the American MLS franchise Chicago Fire .
In addition, McBride is a former national player of the United States and was nominated by Bruce Arena for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , his third World Cup after 1998 and 2002 .
Athletic career
McBride played very successfully soccer at Buffalo Grove High School and helped his school team to a championship of the state of Illinois in 1988. The 1.83 meter tall and header strong striker went from 1990 in Missouri , the Saint Louis University and developed there until his graduation in 1993, one of the nation's best player and top scorer of his university .
On March 26, 1993 McBride made his debut in the game against Honduras for the US national team and in early 1994 briefly joined the low-class team Milwaukee Rampage . For the 1994/95 season he moved to Europe in the 2nd Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg , but did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player and returned to his homeland in North America, where he joined Columbus Crew in 1996 via the top position in the draft system American Major League Soccer , which was entering its first season, returned home. McBride's first year for Columbus was very successful with 17 goals of his own. He also scored the first goal for the 2-1 win against Costa Rica in the second qualifying round for the 1998 World Cup in France . In 1997, McBride came to only thirteen games for his club, but also scored twice in the final qualifying round against El Salvador . Despite a yield of ten goals in the following season, he continued to miss a large part of the games for his club, the reason being that he was needed for the national team at the same time and was also nominated for the squad for the World Cup final tournament in France has been. McBride then experienced a high performance in 2002. He won the Gold Cup with the national team and was elected to the best team of the tournament. He also celebrated a surprise success at the soccer world championship, scored one goal each in his five appearances against Portugal and Mexico and was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against the later finalist from Germany . With his club Columbus Crew he also won his first important club title with the US Open Cup .
In January 2003, McBride joined Everton for three months , where he stormed alongside Wayne Rooney, then 17 . After four goals in the first six games, he developed into a crowd favorite, but then went back to Columbus again after the loan period had expired . After another season in the United States, he moved to Fulham at the beginning of 2004 for a transfer fee of one million dollars and signed a 2½-year contract there. From then on, he developed into a regular player and replaced Joe-Max Moore as the record scorer in the national team in the same year .
In 2005, McBride was voted into the best team in the MLS of all time.
In July 2006, shortly after the World Cup, he announced his retirement from the national team. In the summer of 2008 he was the captain of the US soccer team in Beijing.
On July 30, 2008 McBride moved to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer, he came in exchange for Chad Barrett , as Toronto FC owned the trade rights to Brian McBride.
In September 2010, McBride announced his retirement at the end of the season.
