Ricardo Antonio Mayorga Pérez (born October 3, 1973 in Managua ) is a Nicaraguan boxer .

Professional career

The normal boom Mayorga began his professional career in 1993 in the light welterweight division in the neighboring state of Costa Rica with a knockout defeat in the first fight. He lost two more times in the build-up phase, but subsequently showed good clout and several spectacular knockout victories in the world championship and light middleweight division. The American boxing promoter Don King signed him and the WBA made him the mandatory challenger of the undefeated world champion Andrew Lewis , who had left King shortly before , without previously beating a well-known opponent .

The fight on July 28, 2001 was canceled in the second round after a wound in Lewis as a result of a head collision and remained without evaluation, so that a rematch was scheduled. King's calculation worked, Mayorga actually had the recipe with his wild street thug style on March 30, 2002 to master Lewis and defeat him in the fifth round by technical knockout.

Then there was a clash with the undefeated WBC World Champion Vernon Forrest on January 25, 2003 . Completely surprising, Mayorga was also able to defeat this prematurely and combined the WBA and WBC titles. He won the direct rematch on points.

On December 13, 2003, he met IBF World Champion Cory Spinks in another unification match . In the fight, points were deducted in the fifth and eleventh rounds. Without these point deductions, a draw would have been possible for him, but he lost the fight on points.

He then rose briefly to two weight classes in the middleweight division to compete on October 2, 2004 in a financially lucrative fight against Félix Trinidad . However, he lost to a technical knockout in the eighth round. Although he was able to get a knockdown against Trinidad, he had to go down three times himself.

After this short episode in the middleweight division, he went back to the light welterweight division and won the vacant WBC world title on August 13, 2005 by winning points against the Italian Michele Piccirillo , but lost it in the first defense of the title on May 6, 2006 to Óscar de la Hoya by technical knockout in the sixth round. He received devastating reviews from the trade press for this appearance after he had been noticed in the run-up to the marketing of the fight mainly through aggressive appearance and insults De la Hoya. During the obligatory doping control, he was shown to have taken the substance Lasix . This remedy is used to accelerate the loss of fluids in the body in order to be able to maintain the weight limit.

Afterwards he only fought sporadically and in different weight classes. In November 2007 he defeated Fernando Vargas over twelve rounds on points in a super middleweight fight . He then lost in September 2008 in the light middleweight division against Shane Mosley by a knockout in round twelve. Mayorga played his last fight on March 12, 2011 against Miguel Cotto . After losing to Cotto by technical knockout in the twelfth round, he announced his retirement from active boxing.
