Koufonisi ( Greek Κουφονήσι ( n. Sg. )) Is a now uninhabited Greek island that is four kilometers south of the coast of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean . The island is about 2.8 kilometers long and up to 3 kilometers wide in a north-south direction. It has an area of 4.26 km². The flat island with little vegetation reaches a maximum height of only 73 meters.

The island was not always uninhabited: the ruins of a theater with a capacity of about 1000 people, a public bath and other buildings from Roman times have been preserved; it was probably inhabited since Minoan times. Otherwise Koufonisi is not very spectacular, but has some beautiful bays for swimming. During the season, it is called by excursion boats from the southern Cretan coastal town of Makrygialos, 18 kilometers to the north-west . Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Sitia .

Since Eleanor's falcons visit the island every year as a nesting site, the IBA ("Important Bird Area") bird sanctuary GR 196 Koufonisi Island (Νήσος Κουφονήσι) was designated by the bird protection organization BirdLife International .
