Cory Spinks (born February 20, 1978 in St. Louis ) is a retired American boxer.
amateur
Spinks had a successful amateur career, among other things he won the renowned national Golden Gloves tournament in 1997 and achieved a score of (78-3).
professional
He made his successful professional debut in the light welterweight division in November 1997. In 1998 he suffered his first defeat against the Mexican Antonio Díaz .
Welterweight
After this setback he switched to the welterweight division and won his next sixteen fights and got the opportunity on April 13, 2004 to box against Michele Piccirillo in Italy for the vacant IBF . Although he lost on points controversially, he won the rematch on March 22, 2003 and thus secured the IBF title.
Then Spinks went to a fight with Ricardo Mayorga , the title holder of the WBA and WBC . He went into this fight as an outsider, but was ultimately able to prevail on points and became the undisputed welterweight world champion through this title union. He owed his success not least to two point deductions for Mayorga, without which the fight would have ended in a draw.
He then defended the title against Zab Judah and the former long-time lightweight world champion of the WBC Miguel Ángel González . On February 5, 2005, he met Judah again on his next title defense in his hometown of St. Louis in front of 22,000 spectators. Spinks lost this encounter and with it his title through a technical knockout in the ninth round.
Light middleweight
He then remained inactive for more than a year and only returned to the ring as a light middleweight on July 8, 2006. His opponent was the IBF light middleweight champion Roman Karmasin . Spinks won just on points.
family
Cory Spinks is the son of Leon Spinks and the nephew of Michael Spinks . He was born five days after his father's sensational victory over world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali . His brother Darrell Spinks (* 1973) was also a professional boxer from 1995 to 2000, but only with moderate success. Another brother, Leon Calvin Spinks, was murdered in 1990.
