Roman Alexandrowitsch Karmasin ( Russian Роман Александрович Кармазин ; born January 2, 1973 in Kuznetsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian professional boxer and former IBF world champion in super welterweight.
career
Roman Karmasin turned pro in 1996 and initially boxed mainly in Russia. On June 3, 2000 he won in Karlsruhe in the framework of a Ottke title defense, the vacant European title in light middleweight through a TKO victory in the third round over the Turkish Orhan Delibaş. He then put the title down again in order to strive for a world championship fight.
So he got the opportunity on July 12, 2002 in Madrid to fight the interim title of the WBC against the Spaniard Javier Castillejo . However, Karmasin lost over twelve rounds controversial on points - his first defeat as a professional boxer.
In 2003 he won the European title again and defended it twice. In April 2005 he prevailed in an IBF eliminator against former WBC middleweight champion Keith Holmes and thus became the mandatory challenger of the Ugandan IBF title holder Kassim Ouma.
The fight with Ouma came on July 14, 2005 in Las Vegas and Karmasin secured the title with a clear win on points. But already in his first title defense on July 14, 2006 he lost the belt controversially to Cory Spinks .
In 2007 he played two fights, each of which he won early: he defeated James Obede Toney from Ghana by technical knockout in the fourth round and in an elimination match for the WBA association he scored a knockout in the third round against the Mexican Alejandro Garcia. Completely surprisingly, Karmazin lost on January 19, 2008 in New York's Madison Square Garden against the Congolese Alex Bunema on points by a technical knockout in the tenth round.
Karmasin changed the weight class after this defeat and rose to the middleweight division. He won his next three fights and was then given the opportunity to play an elimination match for the IBF World Middleweight Championship against Colombian Dionisio Miranda. He won the match on January 8, 2010 by knockout in round ten, which made him the mandatory challenger of IBF title holder Sebastian Sylvester . The fight against Sylvester ended on June 5, 2010 in Neubrandenburg in a controversial draw (117: 111; 111: 118; 114: 114), so that Sylvester defended the title.
Karmasin stayed high in the IBF rankings and was directly nominated for another elimination match by the IBF Association; the Australian Daniel Geale was selected as an opponent . The fight took place on October 31, 2010 in Australia and Karmasin was knocked out by a technical knockout in the twelfth round. After this defeat he ended his career.
