Sebastian Sylvester (born July 9, 1980 in Greifswald ) is a former German professional boxer and IBF middleweight world champion.
Career
amateur
From 1990 to 2002 Sebastian Sylvester, trained by Horst Femfert, boxed as an amateur for BSV Greifswald and recorded 76 wins and 19 losses. He was German junior champion in 1998 and 1999. In 1998 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Buenos Aires , but lost in the light middleweight class in the first fight.
Professional career
In 2002 Sebastian Sylvester switched to the professional camp for the small Berlin Wiking boxing team. He was trained by Hartmut Schröder. However, he lost his professional debut in May 2002 by knockout in the first round. In 2003 he became International German Champion and in 2004 German Champion. He defended this title twice, including an early victory over Dirk Dzemski . Since September 2004, the trained drywall builder has also been under contract with Wilfried Sauerland's boxing stable in co-promotion .
On July 16, 2005, Sebastian Sylvester was the first European middleweight champion. In more than 45 years since Bubi Scholz (1958-1959), no German had succeeded in winning the European Championship in this weight class. He won the title in Nuremberg against Morrade Hakkar from France and defended it against the Italian Lorenzo di Giacomo, each on points. The British Steve Bendall, substitute opponent for the officially ill Dzemski, was able to beat Sylvester in his next title defense with a technical knockout in the third round. On June 3, 2006, however, he lost the title after a defeat by technical knockout in the eighth round to the unbeaten Finn Amin Asikainen .
After three victories in development battles, there was a rematch against Asikainen on June 23, 2007. Sylvester was able to regain the European middleweight title by defeating the Finn in a controversial fight in the eleventh round by technical knockout.
In his third defense of his title on April 12, 2008 in Neubrandenburg , he beat the 40-year-old Spanish ex-world champion Javier Castillejo by knocking out in the twelfth round and thus achieved first place in the WBA world rankings. Sylvester thus qualified for a world championship fight against Felix Sturm, who is under contract with the competing boxing stable Universum Box-Promotion . Sylvester then put down the European title to box on November 1, 2008 in Oberhausen against Sturm for the WBA World Championship. He lost the fight clearly over twelve rounds on points.
After the defeat, Sylvester separated from the Wiking boxing team in January 2009 and switched completely to the Sauerland boxing stable, which since then has also taken on its management in addition to promoting its fights. Since his former coach Hartmut Schröder did not accept an offer to switch to Sauerland, Karsten Röwer , who had been employed by Sauerland since November 2008, became his new coach. He won his first fight for Sauerland on February 28, 2009 by knockout in the seventh round against the Italian Gaetano Nespro. In his next fight on June 27, 2009, he defeated the American Lajuan Simon, who was previously opponent of Arthur Abraham , by a unanimous decision on points (116: 112; 115: 113; 117: 111). With this he fought for second place on the IBF world rankings.
Since the reigning IBF middleweight world champion Arthur Abraham resigned the IBF title in July 2009 and switched to the super middleweight division, Sylvester got the chance to box for a world championship belt for the second time. On September 19, 2009, Sylvester met number one in the IBF rankings, Giovanni Lorenzo from the Dominican Republic , in his third fight in the Neubrandenburger Jahnsportforum , and secured the IBF belt by winning points over twelve rounds (111-116; 116- 112; 115-113).
His first, voluntary, title defense took place on January 30, 2010 again in Neubrandenburg. The opponent was initially supposed to be the Spaniard Pablo Navascues, but since he tested positive in a doping control a week before the match date, the US American Billy Lyell was hired as a substitute opponent at short notice. Sylvester defeated Lyell with a technical knockout in the tenth round after his coach Jack Loew threw in the towel.
The first compulsory defense of the IBF title denied Sylvester on June 5, 2010 against the 37-year-old Russian Roman Karmasin , a former world light middleweight champion. The fight went the full distance of twelve rounds and was considered a draw, so Sylvester remained IBF world champion. The scoring was considered controversial, as the scores of the US judges Matthew Podgorski (117: 111 for Karmasin) and John Lawson (118: 111 for New Year's Eve) diverged greatly. During the counting of the points slip, there were tumults on the ring, triggered by a staff member of the Russian who tried to steal the points slip of the Canadian Pasqual Procopio and to take photos. Procopio had initially rated the fight 114: 113 for Karmasin, which would have meant the Russian's victory. However, since this evaluation included a round with a point distribution of 10:10 (undecided), which is not permitted according to the IBF rules, the evaluation of this round was subsequently changed to a 10: 9 evaluation in favor of New Year's Eve. The resulting overall result of the Procopios classification (114: 114) led to a draw and enabled Sylvester to defend his title.
In the subsequent voluntary title defense he defeated the German-Turkish Mahir Oral in October 2010 . Although Sylvester suffered a severely bleeding laceration as a result of a headbutt in the second round, he clearly dominated the fight and ultimately won unanimously on points. Oral also had to go down and be counted after being hit in the eighth, ninth and eleventh rounds. After that, another voluntary title defense against Mehdi Bouadla was planned for January 22, 2011, which Sylvester canceled a few days before the fight date due to a viral illness.
He then had to complete a compulsory defense of the IBF title against the Australian Daniel Geale . Geale had previously secured the right to challenge with a knockout victory in an eliminator against Roman Karmasin. The fight took place on May 8, 2011 in Neubrandenburg and Sylvester lost on points. This was followed by a fight for the vacant EBU European Championship against the Pole Grzegorz Proksa on October 1, 2011, which also took place in Neubrandenburg. Sylvester had no chance against the undefeated southpaw, suffered an early bleeding wound over the right eye due to the impact and finally gave up the fight after the third round. In March 2012 he ended his career as an active boxer.
