Daniel Geale (born February 26, 1981 in Launceston , Tasmania ) is an Australian boxer and former world champion of the IBF and WBA middleweight division.

Amateur career

As an amateur, he won the Oceanic Welterweight Championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002 , and in 2004 also in the light middleweight division. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 he was also Australian champion. He also won the welterweight gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games . He took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , the World Cup in Astana in 2002 and the 2003 World Boxing Championships in Bangkok , but did not achieve any medal ranks.

Professional career

On October 1, 2004, he played his first professional fight in Southport and won by knockout in round 3 against the Queensland champion Danny Bellert. In his next fight he defeated the Western Australian champion Domenic DeVanna by knockout in round 2 and also won the rematch by knockout in the first round.

On September 16, 2005, he won the Pan-Pacific Championship of the IBF , by knockout in the 2nd round over Steve Douet. On October 22nd, the Oriental-Pacific championship of the IBF followed by knockout in round 8 over Garry Comer.

On December 14, 2007 he won the IBO world title , a prestigious but not one of the four most influential world associations (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) counting world championship title. He lost this in his second title defense through a split point decision to the former, two-time WBA world champion Anthony Mundine .

On October 31, 2010 he defeated the former IBF world champion Roman Karmazin by knockout in the 12th round in an elimination match for the chance for the IBF title . Thus he received the right to challenge the reigning IBF world champion Sebastian Sylvester . He finally defeated this on May 7, 2011 in Neubrandenburg with 2-1 judges' votes.

He defended his World Cup belt for the first time on August 31, 2011 in Australia unanimously on points against Eromosele Albert . On March 7, 2012, he defended the title on points against Osumanu Adama . On September 1, 2012, he won the unification title against WBA super world champion Felix Sturm . Geale decided to initially voluntarily defend his title against Anthony Mundine instead of boxing against WBA mandatory challenger Gennady Golowkin . As a result, the title of WBA super world champion was revoked again.

On January 30, 2013, he defeated Anthony Mundine (44-4), against whom he had suffered his only defeat as a professional in 2009, unanimously on points. He finally lost his IBF title on August 17, 2013 just on points to the British Darren Barker (25-1).

On July 26, 2014 he lost to Gennady Golovkin (29-0) by tKo in the third round . A win against Jarrod Fletcher (18-2) in December 2014 was followed by a defeat in June 2015 against Miguel Cotto (39-4).

In October 2016, he suffered a premature loss to Renold Quinlan (10-1).
