Osumanu Adama (born December 24, 1980 in Accra ) is a professional boxer from Ghana .

Amateur career

Adama won the silver medal in the light middleweight division at the 1999 African Games in Johannesburg , when he was eliminated in the final against Mohamed Hikal . In 2000 he took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he was defeated in the first light middleweight fight against Mohamed Marmouri.

Professional career

In 2001 he played his first professional fight in Ghana and remained unbeaten until 2009 when he lost on points to Dyah Davis on his US debut. In 2010 he made the leap to the USA and was signed by Chicago Fight Club Promotion. In April 2010 he also lost his second US fight on points against Donovan George.

In December 2010 he defeated the world championship challenger Ángel Hernández unanimously on points and was thereby international title holder of the IBO in the middleweight division. In March 2011, he defeated Marcus Upshaw early in the fight for the Intercontinental title of the IBO and the US middleweight championship. In a World Cup qualifying match in October 2011, he also managed an early victory against ex-world champion Roman Karmasin . Meanwhile, Adama was trained by Joseph Awinongya.

On March 7, 2012, he boxed in Hobart for the IBF World Middleweight Championship, but lost on points to the Australian title holder Daniel Geale . The fight was originally supposed to take place in Adama's hometown of Accra, but its promoter was unable to make appropriate connections. So the fight was moved to his opponent's homeland.

In March 2013, Adama won on points against Grady Brewer . However, since he was half a pound (around 227 grams) above the agreed weight limit, he subsequently did not receive the intended titles WBC -Continental-Americas, IBO-Intercontinental and UBF -Intercontinental.

On February 1, 2014 Adama boxed in Monte-Carlo against the 85: 1 favorite Gennadi Golowkin for the world title of the IBO and WBA in the middleweight division, to which he was defeated by technical knockout in the seventh round, after the referee stopped the fight.
