Mohamed Hikal (born January 10, 1979 ) is an Egyptian boxer . Hikal was African champion in 1998 and 2007, winner of the African Games in 1999 and 2003, bronze medalist at the 2005 World Championships and a four-time participant in the Olympic Games ( 2000 , 2004 , 2008 , 2012 ).

Career

Until 2000

His first international tournament played Hikal in 1997 at the Military World Championships, in which he was eliminated in the light middleweight (−71 kg) in the first fight against Gennadiy Khlokhistyn, Russia (22: 7). The same happened to him at the Goodwill Games 1998 , where he failed to Gaidarbek Gaidarbekow , Russia (8: 1), but in the same year he won the African championships with a final victory over Adbelghani Kinzi, Algeria .

He was also able to win the Pan-African Games in 1999 with a final victory over Osumanu Adama , Ghana . With this success he had also qualified for the Olympic Games 2000 , but failed here after a victory over In Joon Song, South Korea (16: 5), in the quarter-finals at the later bronze medalist Pornchai Thongburan , Thailand (15: 9).

2001-2004

In 2001 Hikal won the silver medal at the Francophonie Games and was eliminated from the quarter-finals at the Mediterranean Games .

At the World Championships in 2003 , Hikal lost his first fight against Vadim Mezga, Belarus (21:14) , after a reform of the weight classes now in welterweight (-69 kg ). In the same year he also won the gold medal at the first and only Afro-Asian Games and at the African Games. This title meant the second participation in the Olympic Games for Hikal , but it did not come after a victory over Basharmal Sultani, Afghanistan (40:12), and a narrow defeat against the defending champion and eventual bronze medalist Oleg Saitow , Russia (18:17) beyond the round of 16.

2005-2008

In 2005 Hikal celebrated his greatest success: After he had already won the Mediterranean Games in the middleweight division (-75 kg), he won the bronze medal at the world championships . He beat Alexander Brand, Colombia (30: 9), Gennadi Golowkin , Kazakhstan (27:21), and Javid Taghiev, Azerbaijan (34:20), before failing in the semi-finals to Ismail Sillach , Ukraine (28:22) .

2007 started for Hikal by winning the Pan-Arab Championships and the African Championships. But this time things went worse at the African Games when he was eliminated in the preliminary round against the later gold medalist Nabil Kassel, Algeria (17:15) and the subsequent World Championships were not crowned with success for him either: Hikal lost the first fight against Dariusz Sęk , Poland (17:11). The year ended by winning the Pan-Arab Games.

Since Hikal had not been able to call up his performance in the decisive competitions, i.e. the Pan-African Games and the World Championships, in order to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2008 , he had to take part in the Olympic qualification tournament in Algiers , which he won with a final victory over the silver medalist of the Pan-African Games 2007 Ahmed Saraku, Ghana (11: 4) won. In his third participation in the Olympic Games, Hikal failed in the first Hikal to James DeGale , England (13: 4).

2009–2012

In the years after the 2008 Olympics, Hikal did not participate in any international championships. It was not until 2011 that he reappeared on the results lists and won the Pan-Arab Games. At the World Championships in the same year, however, he retired after defeating Kaupo Arro, Estonia (12: 3), in the preliminary round against Darren O'Neill , Ireland (15:13).

In order to still qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games , Hikal took part in the African Olympic qualification tournament in Casablanca in 2012 , finished 5th and was thus able to qualify. In his fourth Olympic Games in a row, Hikal lost his first fight against Soltan Migitinov , Azerbaijan (20:12).
