Darren O'Neill (born September 13, 1985 in Kilkenny ) is an Irish boxer . He was Vice European Champion in 2010 and was a participant in the 2012 Olympic Games in the middleweight division .
Career
Darren O'Neill boxed for Paulstown Boxing Club and started playing at the age of six.
National
He was Irish junior light heavyweight champion in 2003, and runner-up in the light heavyweight division in 2005 and 2006. He then boxed middleweight, where he had tough competition with Jason Quigley , Eamon O'Kane , Michael O'Reilly and Darren Sutherland , among others . In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 he won the title in this weight class and was runner-up in 2008 and 2014. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 he became Irish heavyweight champion.
Europe
Darren O'Neill was quarter-finalist of the Junior European Championships in 2003, before he started at the European Championships in 2006 for the first time in the adults and was also eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Scots Fundo Mhura . At the EM 2008 he was defeated in the round of 16 against Nikolajs Grišuņins .
At the EU Championships in 2009 he won the middleweight gold medal after defeating Bogdan Juratoni , among others . He then achieved his greatest success to date at the 2010 European Championships ; by victories against Ronald Gavril , Anthony Ogogo , Serhij Derewjantschenko and Mladen Manew he reached the middleweight final, which he lost to Artyom Chebotaryov and thus won the silver medal.
At the European Championships in 2011 he beat Denis Radovan , among others , but was defeated in the quarterfinals against Dmytro Mytrofanow . He then achieved his next success by winning the silver medal in the light heavyweight division at the 2014 EU Championships. At the 2015 European Championships , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Yevgeny Tishchenko and at the 2015 European Games in the quarter-finals against Heworh Manukjan with 1: 2.
He also lost in the last sixteen against Ramasan Muslimow at the 2017 European Championship .
World Championships and Olympic Games
He played his first world championships in 2009 , where he was only eliminated in the round of 16 against Andranik Hakobjan . At the 2011 World Championships he reached the quarterfinals against Glodi Eneste, Mohamed Hikal and Mladen Manew, where he lost in the fight for a place in the medal ranks against Ryota Murata .
With this success he qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he was the flag bearer of the Irish Olympic team and captain of the boxing team. In his first fight at the Olympics, he defeated Muideen Akamji before losing to German Stefan Härtel in the round of 16 and thus reaching a ninth place.
In the European and worldwide Olympic qualifications in 2016, he was eliminated early.
World Series of Boxing
On February 13, 2016 he made his debut for the team "Caciques Venezuela" in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), which he lost 3-0 to the junior world champion Sergey Kalchugin.
