Stephanocereus luetzelburgii is a species of plant in the genus Stephanocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet luetzelburgii honors the German pharmacist, botanist, engineer and explorer Philipp Freiherr von Lützelburg (1880–1948).

description

Stephanocereus luetzelburgii usually grows individually with rarely branched shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 meters. The initially spherical and later elongated, bottle-shaped shoots are dark green. The thinner part of the shoot at the top is 60 to 80 centimeters long. There are 13 to 16 ribs . The 4 to 5 strong central spines are yellow and gray with age. They are up to 3 inches long. The 15 to 18 needle radial spines are yellow to gray and up to 15 millimeters long. The cephalium includes the thin part of the shoot. The areoles are covered with wool.

The bell- to funnel-shaped flowers usually appear in groups near the shoot tip. They are white to slightly pink, up to 2.6 centimeters long and have a diameter of 1.5 centimeters. The depressed spherical, initially green fruits later turn blue and reach a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stephanocereus luetzelburgii is distributed in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Bahia . The first description as Cereus luetzelburgii was published in 1923 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Nigel Paul Taylor and Urs Eggli placed them in the genus Stephanocereus in 1991 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
