Stephanocereus is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek noun "στέφανος" (stephanos) for wreath , means wreath-cereus and refers to the wreath-like cephalium on the shoot tips. The type species of the genus is Stephanocereus leucostele .
description
The species of the genus Stephanocereus sometimes grow tree-like, are not branched or occasionally sprout from the base. They reach a height of 1 to 5 meters. The initially spherical or egg-shaped shoots are later elongated to columnar to bottle-shaped. The 12 to 20, low ribs carry areoles from which abundant white wool rises, which covers the shoot. The 1 to 4 central spines are white to gold in color and 3 to 4 inches long. The yellow to white, 15 to 20 radial spines are 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long. The cephalium is located at the tip of the shoot or is ring-like. It is made up of dense bristles, white wool, and hair.
The tubular to funnel-shaped flowers are white to sometimes slightly pink and 2.6 to 7 inches long. They open at night. The pericarpel and the flower tube have a few scattered small scales and areoles that are bald or with little white wool.
The egg-shaped to elliptical, bare, non-tearing fruits are blue to slightly purple-green. The permanent remnant of the flower turns black. The flesh is clear as water. The large, egg to pear-shaped seeds are black and tuberous.
Distribution and systematics

It was first described in 1926 by Alwin Berger . The type species of the genus is Stephanocereus leucostele . The genus includes the two species:
