Stephanocereus leucostele is a species of plant in the genus Stephanocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Stephanocereus leucostele usually grows individually with columnar, rarely branched shoots and reaches heights of 2 to 5 meters. The bluish green shoots, which are divided into unevenly long sections, have a diameter of 4 to 8 centimeters. There are 13 to 18 ribs . The 1 to 2 stiff central spines are white to golden yellow and 3 to 4 inches long. The up to 20 radial spines are white and 5 to 15 millimeters long. The ring-shaped cephalium formed at the end of the vegetative growth is densely woolly and hairy.
The tubular to bell-shaped flowers are white and 6 to 7 centimeters long. Occasionally they also appear on older cephalalgia. The spherical or slightly elongated, initially green fruits later turn blue and reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Stephanocereus leucostele is widespread in the south of the Brazilian state of Bahia . The first description as Cereus leucostele was published in 1908 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke . Alwin Berger placed them in the genus Stephanocereus in 1926 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
