Eamon O'Kane (* 18th March 1982 in Belfast ) is a former Irish professional boxer in the middleweight division .

Amateur career

O'Kane started for the Immaculata ABC Belfast boxing club and fought in the middleweight division. His trainer was Gerry Nuggent. Although Northern Ireland does not belong to the Republic of Ireland , but to the United Kingdom , O'Kane started at both the Ulster Championships and the Irish Championships. He also competed for Ireland on an international level.

He won the Ulster championship several times, most recently in 2010. At Irish championships, he had tough competition with Jason Quigley , Darren O'Neill , Darren Sutherland and Andy Lee, among others . In 2003, 2005 and 2007 he won silver, and in 2009 and 2010 bronze.

At the 2003 Commonwealth Championships he won the silver medal, defeating Neil Perkins and losing to Jamie Pittman in the final. In 2005 he won silver again after losing to James DeGale in the final , and the gold medal in 2007 after beating George Groves in the final .

At the European Championships in Liverpool in 2008 he defeated Adem Kılıççı and Andranik Hakobjan , lost in the semifinals to Maxim Koptjakow and thus won a bronze medal. He also won the 2010 Commonwealth Games with a final victory over Anthony Ogogo .

Professional career

He won his professional debut on June 4, 2011 early in the first round against Dmitrij Kalinovskij. In 2012 he won the Prizefighter All Irish Tournament and in 2013 the Irish Middleweight Championship. In October 2013 he defeated the European champion Kerry Hope in the fight for the intercontinental IBF title and in April 2014 the Mexican Alvaro Gaona in the duel for the title WBC International Silver . In September 2014, he also boxed a draw against Virgilijus Stapulionis.

In May 2015 he defeated the undefeated Lewis Taylor (record: 16-0) and was able to compete in an IBF title elimination in Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 17, 2015 , which he lost unanimously to Tureano Johnson .

In April 2016 he ended his boxing career for family and health reasons.
