Neil Perkins
Neil Perkins (born October 2, 1981 in Shrewsbury ) is an English boxer . He won at the World Cup in 2005, a bronze medal in the welterweight division .
Career
Neil Perkins grew up in Liverpool and started boxing as a teenager at Kirkdale Boxing Club Liverpool . Terry Edwards, David Alloway and Paul Walmsley have been his main coaches throughout his career. He was southpaw and a feared counter-boxer who won many of his fights prematurely. As a junior, the 1.76 meter tall athlete had no notable successes. These began in 2002 when he became the English senior middleweight champion and repeated this success in 2003. During his membership of the English national team of boxers from 2003 to 2007 he was the captain of this team because of his personality.
In 2002 he won the middleweight division at the 4-nation tournament in Killarney , defeating Kenneth Egan , Ireland , on points (7: 6) in the final battle . In 2003 he finished in the same tournament that took place in Cardiff that year , behind Andy Lee from Ireland, against whom he lost on points (10:22), the 2nd place. At the 3rd Commonwealth Championships in 2003 in Kuala Lumpur he came in the middleweight behind Jamie Pittman from Australia and Eamon O'Kane from Ireland in 3rd place and won his first medal at an important international championship.
In the Olympic year 2004 he trained in welterweight and started at the championship of the European Union in Madrid . He took 3rd place behind Bulent Ulusoy from Turkey and Vilmos Balogh from Hungary . In the same year he failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens . At the decisive qualifying tournament in Baku he finished 4th and missed the norm by just one place.
In 2005 Neil Perkins won the European Union Championships in Cagliari . In the welterweight division, he defeated four opponents prematurely. In the final fight he beat István Szili from Hungary through RSC in the 3rd round. In the same year he achieved the greatest success in his boxer career, because he won a bronze medal at the world championships in Mianyang / China . On the way to this success he won over Roberto Blazo, Slovakia by breaking off in the 3rd round and over Qanat Ïsläm , China (25:19) and over Samvel Matevosjan , Armenia (34:17) each on points, while he was in the semifinals against Magomed Nurutdinow from Belarus lost on points (21:33).
In 2006 he finished 3rd at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne welterweight. After winning three fights, he lost in the semifinals against Vijender Kumar from India on points (14:22). At the 2006 European Championships in Plovdiv he was eliminated in the preliminary round by losing points to the Serbian Zoran Mitrovic (24:34) and finished in 17th place. Neil Perkins met Mitrovic in his first fight at the 2007 World Cup and lost again on points (12:17). He was eliminated and only came in 33rd place.
After this world championship, Neil Perkins ended his amateur career. Between 2008 and 2011 he played five professional fights against insignificant opponents, of which he won four and lost one. In 2009 he founded the Fighting Fit City Gym in Birmingham , of which he is Managing Director.
