Anthony Mundine (born May 21, 1975 in Newtown , New South Wales ) is an Australian professional boxer and former, two-time world champion of the WBA in super middleweight.

family

His father is the former professional boxer Tony Mundine (* 1951), who ended his career in 1984 with a record of 80 wins in 96 fights. He was Australian champion in four weight classes, Commonwealth champion in two weight classes and world championship challenger to WBA title holder Carlos Monzón .

One of his cousins ​​is the rugby league player Blake Ferguson (* 1990).

Rugby career

Anthony Mundine was a professional rugby league player in the National Rugby League (NRL), the top professional rugby league division in Australia , from 1993 to 2000 . With the St. George Illawarra Dragons he was in 1996 and 1998 in the Grand Final , which was lost both times. In 1997 he also played 18 games for the Brisbane Broncos , which also won the Super League in the same year . His nickname "The Man" came about during his rugby days. Boxing career

Before and during his rugby days he trained as an amateur boxer in his father's boxing club, but only fought four amateur fights before turning to professional boxing in the summer of 2000. He won his debut with a knockout in the fourth round against Gerrard Zohs, who was experienced in 21 fights. After three more victories, he won the Australian super middleweight championship in February 2001 with an early win against Marc Bargero (record: 23-7). In his next fight in April of the same year, he also won the PABA super middleweight title by knockout in the third round against Timo Masua (13-3) . He was also able to win his next three fights, winning the IBF Pan-Pacific championship title in super middleweight with a points win against Sam Soliman .

With a balance of 10-0 (9th knockout) he boxed on December 1, 2001 in Dortmund as a challenger for the IBF World Championship in super middleweight, but lost to the German title holder Sven Ottke (24-0) by knockout the tenth round. On March 7, 2007 he boxed again for the vacant WBA super middleweight championship against Sam Soliman and won by knockout in the ninth round. He defended the title against Pablo Nievas (17-1), Jose Clavero (27-5), Nader Hamdan (40-5) and in a rematch against Soliman before resigning to boxing middleweight. After further victories against Toshiharu Kaneyama (28-4) and Rafael Pintos (31-2), he won the WBA International Middleweight Championship in February 2009 against Shannan Taylor (48-6). On May 27, 2009 he defeated Daniel Geale (21-0) and thereby became world champion of the IBO middleweight division.

After four consecutive wins, including against Robert Medley (27-2) and Ryan Waters (20-2), he surprisingly lost in December 2010 by knockout against Garth Wood (9-1). After defeating this in the rematch, he also won against Xavier Toliver (23-6) and Rigoberto Álvarez (27-3). As a result, he was also interim world champion of the WBA in the light middleweight division. In July 2012, he also defeated Bronco McKart (54-9), winning the IBF North American Middleweight Championship.

On January 30, 2013, he lost the fight for the IBF Middleweight Championship against Daniel Geale, but defeated Shane Mosley prematurely in November . In April 2014 he lost on points to Joshua Clottey (37-4).

In November 2014 he narrowly defeated the undefeated Sergey Rabchenko (25-0), but lost to Charles Hatley (25-1) in November 2015. He then only got back into the ring in February 2017 and lost by majority decision to Danny Green (35-5).
