Giovanni Lorenzo (born October 13, 1980 in San Cristóbal ) is a professional boxer from the Dominican Republic . He lives and trains in the United States .

Amateur career

Lorenzo won a bronze medal in welterweight at the 1997 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellín and the 1998 Pan American Junior Championships in Toluca de Lerdo . He lost it in the semi-finals against the Cubans Roberto Guerra and Glendys Hernandez.

In November 1998 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Buenos Aires , where he lost in the round of 16 against Miguel Espino from the USA. In May 1999 he won the gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mexico. In August 1999 he had to admit defeat to the Canadian Jeremy Molitor in the quarterfinals of the Pan American Games in Winnipeg .

In October 1999 he won the 2nd José Cheo Aponte tournament in Caguas , defeating Joel Salas from the USA, Junior Greenidge from Barbados and Gilbert Rodriguez from Puerto Rico. In June 2000 he was also able to win the American Olympic qualification in Buenos Aires . He won it in the semifinals again against Junior Greenidge and in the final against Ryan Savage from Canada.

He then took part in welterweight at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . After beating Usman Ullah Khan from Pakistan, he lost to Steven Küchler from Germany in the round of 16 . In June 2001 he started in the light middleweight division at the World Championships in Belfast , where he was eliminated in the second preliminary round against Marat Baktibasarow from Kazakhstan.

Professional career

Lorenzo turned pro in the US in 2002 and won 26 fights in a row, 18 of which by knockout. He defeated, among others, the undefeated Dennis Sharpe (17-0) and the Armenian Archak Termeliksetian (15-2) each early and won the Dominican middleweight championship in April 2005.

On June 21, 2008 he boxed in a title eliminator of the IBF against Raúl Marquez (40-3), but lost to this in Hollywood (Florida) over twelve rounds on points. A subsequent knockout win against the Colombian Dionisio Miranda (19-3) finally gave him an IBF World Cup chance. He fought on September 19, 2009 in Neubrandenburg against Sebastian Sylvester (31-3) for the vacant title that Arthur Abraham had resigned to advance to the super middleweight division. Lorenzo lost the fight by a 2-1 judge decision on points.

After two subsequent knockout victories, he received another middleweight championship opportunity on September 4, 2010 in Cologne . He boxed for the WBA World Championship against Felix Sturm (33-2), but lost again over twelve rounds on points. He missed the chance of a possible rematch due to another point defeat in April 2011 to Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (25-0).

In August 2012 he also suffered a point defeat against Sam Soliman (41-11), who was then ranked first in the IBF world rankings. On August 19, 2013 he lost on points against Daniel Jacobs (25-1).

On April 11, 2014, he lost prematurely to Gilberto Sánchez (27-0) in Las Vegas.
