San Cristóbal is a city in the Dominican Republic . San Cristóbal is the capital of the province of San Cristóbal of the same name . The city itself has 137,422 inhabitants, the city district 83,345 (as of 2002 ). San Cristóbal was founded in the 16th century. The first Dominican constitution was signed here in 1844.

San Cristóbal is located in a small valley at the foot of the Cordillera Central (Hispaniola) mountains between the two rivers Nigua and Nizao. The city is located approximately 30 km from Santo Domingo near Bajos de Haina on the DR-2 motorway . The city is located near the Caribbean Sea in a hilly landscape.
