San Cristóbal is a province in the south of the Dominican Republic . Originally the province was called Trujillo, after Rafael Trujillo . In addition, until 1992 the province of Monte Plata belonged to the province.

In 2006 the provincial town of Bajos de Haina was "nominated" by the Blacksmith Institute as one of the 10 most polluted cities in the world due to completely improper battery recycling.
