Dajabón is a province in the northwest of the Dominican Republic . It was in 1938 by the Province of Monte Cristi separated and carried to 1961 the name of Libertador .
geography
The south of the province is determined by the Corillera Central. In the west, the Dajabón province is delimited from Haiti by the river of the same name, Rio Dajabón (also called Rio Masacre) . The name of the river comes from the colonial days when the water of the river turned red from the blood of the fighters. In 1776 the border between the Spanish and the French Hispaniola was established, which essentially corresponds to the current border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In 1936, Truijlo committed a massacre of Haitians at the same location, and the water of the river turned red again from the blood of those killed.
The surrounding provinces are Monte Cristi , Santiago Rodríguez and Elías Piña .
economy
As in all provinces, Dajabón cannot be imagined without agriculture. In addition to local products, tobacco and rice are also grown. Milk production is also important.
Due to its proximity to Haiti, trade has become an important factor in the economy.
