Dajabón Is the capital of the Dajabón province in the north of the Dominican Republic . It lies directly on the border with Haiti and its border town Ouanaminthe , north of the Central Cordillera . The border is formed by the Dajabón River, better known as the Río Masacre . This name recalls the Parsley Massacre of 1937, in which around 30,000 Haitians were killed on behalf of the dictator Trujillo .

The population of the municipality is 28,071 inhabitants, the municipality area is 261.0 km²; this results in a population density of 108 inhabitants per square kilometer. The corresponding data for the city itself are: 25,245 inhabitants, 220.8 km², 114 inhabitants / km².

The city was originally founded between 1771 and 1776, but was soon abandoned again during the War of Independence (1791-1804). It was not settled again until 1865, shortly after the Restoration War.

On Mondays and Fridays the city is the marketplace for Haitians, who are only allowed to freely cross the border on these two days. There are thousands of Haitians in the market early in the morning. Agricultural products are offered, especially bananas, but also textiles and household goods. Large loads are delivered upside down or in wheelbarrows. On every market day, 30,000 visitors come to the stands of the 3,000 dealers.
