Samaná is a province in the northeast of the Dominican Republic and includes the peninsula of the same name.

The provincial capital is the city of the same name, Samaná (Santa Barbara de Samaná) with around 40,000 inhabitants.

On the north side of the peninsula there are beaches that are similar to the beaches of the South Pacific with their dense tropical vegetation and coconut palms that extend into the sea.

The largest town next to Santa Barbara de Samaná is Las Terrenas with about 13,000 inhabitants, right on the beach and equipped with many hotels. Overall, there is far less activity there than in the other tourist strongholds such as Punta Cana or Puerto Plata . Nearby, in “El Portillo”, there is a small airfield, which has not been operated since 2013 for cost reasons. In November 2006, the new El Catey International Airport opened . A drive from Santo Domingo to Samaná on the newly built motorway takes around two and a half hours by car. A coastal road completed in 2012 connects El Catey with Las Terrenas and now shortens the journey time to 25 minutes.

Humpback whales can be seen in Samaná Bay from December to March , and they come there to mate. The bay of Samaná, which is 14 km wide, can be crossed between the city of Samaná and Sabana de la mar in a ferry that takes an hour and twice a day (departure from both sides at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.) backwards and also takes small motorbikes. You can also go on whale watching tours in rented boats .

In Samaná it rains far more heavily and more frequently than in any other area of the Dominican Republic.
