The airport Aeropuerto Internacional de el CATEY "Samaná", "Aeropuerto Profesor Juan Bosch" ( IATA code : AZS , ICAO code : MDCY , short: Aeropuerto El Catey , occasionally also Aeropuerto Samaná ) is an international airport located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic , 22 km southeast of Nagua, María Trinidad Sánchez province , 14 km northwest of Sánchez, Samaná province and 8 km east of the road to Santo Domingo (Autopista Papa Juan Pablo II). The airport opened on November 1, 2006. Construction costs were over $ 80 million.

In El Catey, aircraft up to the size of Boeing 747 can take off and land. The airport has 45,000 m² of parking space for up to 4 Boeing 747s. The passenger hall of 9000 m² and an additional area of 1000 m² on the first floor as well as 28 check-in counters, 2 baggage conveyor belts and 2 passenger terminals allow the handling of up to 600 passengers per hour at peak times.

history

In order to promote tourism on the Samaná peninsula, the expansion of the existing Arroyo Barril airport was approved at the end of 1999 as part of the contract with Aerodom Siglo XXI. At the beginning of 2001, however, the contract had to be changed because the acquisition of the necessary land for the expansion of the previous airport would have been too costly and the hilly terrain was viewed as unfavorable for flight operations. Instead of the extension, it was decided to build a new building. The start of construction of the airport was contractually set for the end of May 2001 at the latest and should be called "Aeropuerto Internacional de Samaná".

In September 2003, members of Congress complained that construction was still not completed and passed a resolution asking the concessionaire to continue construction. Likewise, the State Secretary for Public Works should be asked to make the outstanding payments for the land as more than a hundred families have had to vacate the site and are still waiting for compensation. At that time the international airport was already "El Catey" and no longer "Samaná".

In February 2005, President Leonel Fernández promised to push ahead with a number of buildings, including El Catey Airport, so that Samaná's development as a tourist area would be guaranteed.

The airport began operations in November 2006 and was officially inaugurated on February 7, 2007. It was named after him on this occasion in honor of President Juan Bosch .

Traffic figures

The airport is mostly used by foreign passengers (96.4%), who come mainly from Canada (81.4%), the USA (4.9%), France (3.7%) and Portugal (3%) (as of : 2016). The shift in the origin of the passengers is remarkable: in 2007 71% came from Europe and 28% from North America, in 2016 it was only 11.5% from Europe compared to 86.2% from North America. (2016)

The annual passenger volume averaged around 118,000 passengers between 2007 and 2016 with a minimum of 102,000 (2009) and a maximum of 128,000 (2016). In 2016, 1,033 aircraft were handled, which were divided into 924 scheduled flights and 109 charter flights. (2016)
