The Puerto Plata Airport ( span. Aeropuerto Internacional Gregorio Luperon ) is the international airport of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic . With around one million passengers annually, it is the third largest airport in the country and is of great importance for tourism .
Location and transport links
The airport is located 18 km east of Puerto Plata in the north of the country and has only a road connection.
Airlines and Destinations
In addition to regional connections within the Caribbean and to North and South America, the airport is primarily used by charter airlines. Condor and Eurowings regularly connect Puerto Plata with Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main and Munich. The flight time from Germany is about 10 hours.

Incidents
- On November 15, 1992, an Ilyushin Il-18 D of the Cuban Aerocaribbean ( aircraft registration number CU-T1270 ) was flown into a mountain 14 kilometers from the destination while approaching Puerto Plata airport. None of the 34 occupants survived this controlled flight into terrain (CFIT).
- On February 6, 1996, a Boeing 757 crashed on Birgenair Flight 301 through technical failure followed by human error, shortly after take-off from Puerto Plata. 189 passengers were killed.
