Air Transat AT Inc. is a Canadian airline based in Montreal and based at Montreal-Trudeau Airport . It is a subsidiary of the tour operator Transat .

history

Former Air Transat logo

Air Transat was founded in December 1986 by former Quebecair employees . The first flight was carried out almost a year later on November 14, 1987 from Montreal to Acapulco . In 1993 she took over the maintenance base and machines of the insolvent Nationair . Transat works with several companies, such as Transat Holidays, Nolitours, Jonview Canada , which are owned by TDC (Transat Distribution Canada) . TDC specializes in the organization, marketing and sales of city trips and vacation packages.

Today Air Transat is Canada's fourth largest airline after Air Canada , Jazz Aviation and Westjet Airlines . In June 2011, a new corporate design was presented which, in addition to a slightly modified logo, also included a new paint job on the aircraft. This painting was modified again in autumn 2011.

Incidents

  • On July 6, 2001, Air Transat flight 906, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar with the registration number C-FTNA , got into a heavy hail shower after taking off from Lyon with destination Berlin at an altitude of about 6,000 meters . The aircraft, which was around 29 years old at the time, was able to land safely in Lyon with all 208 occupants, but was so badly damaged that it had to be written off as a total write-off. The machine is still parked at Lyon Airport.
  • On August 24, 2001, an Airbus A330-200 with the registration number C-GITS on Air Transat flight 236 from Toronto to Lisbon made the longest glide flight of a jet aircraft in aviation history. Due to an unnoticed leak, kerosene leaked the entire flight , which is why both engines eventually failed over the Atlantic . The machine finally sailed without propulsion with 306 people on board for about 19 minutes about 120 km before it could safely make an emergency landing on Lajes Field in the Azores . No people were injured, this Airbus A330 is still flying for Air Transat today. After the incident, the pilots were awarded the Superior Airmanship Award .
  • On March 6, 2005, Air Transat Flight 961, an Airbus A310-300 with the registration number C-GPAT , suffered a loss of the rudder in flight en route from Cuba to Québec with nine crew members and 261 passengers on board . The cockpit crew returned safely to Cuba. The investigation revealed that the rudder was likely damaged in previous flights. The NTSB report states: "Some time before the occurrence flight, a disbond or in-plane core fracture occurred. The cause of this initial damage may have been a discrete event or a weak bond at the z-section". It was recorded that the crew had not made any unusual rudder movements and that the rudder had not been moved by the pilots at the time of the failure. The subsequent investigation showed that the maintenance procedures specified by the manufacturer were inadequate. As a result of this incident, the maintenance regulations for components made of composite materials were tightened.
