Air North Charter and Training Ltd. (operated as Air North, Yukon's Airline ) is a Canadian airline based in Whitehorse , Yukon . It operates a network of routes within the Yukon and between the Yukon, the Northwest Territories , British Columbia, Alberta and seasonally Alaska.

history

The airline was founded in 1977 by Joseph Sparling and Tom Wood and took up flight operations in the same year as a charter company for the mining companies with a Cessna 206. In the next few decades, aircraft of the type Douglas DC-3 , Beechcraft Model 18 , Douglas DC-4 and some Cessna 172 , deHavilland Beaver, Otter and Caribou and Britten-Norman Islander followed.

Scheduled flights within the Yukon and from Yukon to Alaska followed in the mid-1980s. 1996 began the conversion of aircraft with piston engines to types with turboprop engines.

In 2002 Air North received two Boeing 737-200s and expanded the route network from Yukon to Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. Today the fleet consists of Boeing 737 and Hawker Siddeley 748 .

Air North is owned by Joseph Sparling (51%) (Chairman of the airline) and Vuntut Development (49% owned by Indians from the tribe of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation ). Air North has 180 employees (as of March 2007).

Air North flies scheduled and charter flights to national destinations within Canada. From the main airport, Whitehorse Airport , the Hawker Siddeley 748 serves the destinations Dawson City , Old Crow and Inuvik . Seasonal flights to Fairbanks , Alaska are also available from Dawson City and Old Crow . The three Boeing 737s connect Whitehorse with the major cities of Vancouver / British Columbia , Edmonton and Calgary / Alberta . A code share agreement with Condor has existed since June 2011 . This provides a connection for Condor passengers from Frankfurt to Vancouver, Calgary, Whitehorse and Edmonton in Canada.

Incidents

Air North recorded three serious incidents in its history, two of which were fatal:

  • On June 24, 1983, the engine of a Douglas DC-3 ( registration number N95460) started to burn while in flight . The plane made an emergency landing at Metro Field, Fairbanks . No one was harmed, but the plane had to be written off.
  • On August 19, 1995, a Douglas DC-3 (registration number C-GZOF) had an accident after it had to return to Vancouver Airport after take-off due to an engine failure. One of three people on board the aircraft was killed in an accident.
  • On August 14, 1996, another Douglas DC-3 (registration number C-FGNI) had an accident after another engine started to burn during the flight. Of the three people on board, the flight captain had a fatal accident.
