The Fairbanks International Airport ( IATA code : FAI , ICAO code : PAFA ) is a civil traffic airport about five kilometers southwest of Fairbanks , the second largest city in the American state of Alaska .
The airport, which was completed in 1951, has a terminal building with seven piers in the southeast of the area. Since October 2003 there have been concrete plans to expand and modernize the terminal, including the construction of a new part of the building south of the terminal building and an old part to be dismantled. According to the website, the construction work should be finished in summer 2009. The only major airline with passenger operations that operates according to plan all year round is Alaska Airlines . The airport is the base of 569 aircraft.
particularities
The cargo airline Cargolux has planned Fairbanks as a fixed stopover airport only for refueling for certain transatlantic flights; other cargo airlines also only land here to bunker kerosene. There is no railway or S-Bahn connection at the airport. Another special feature is an artificial water area that is set up for take-offs and landings of seaplanes .
