The Eielson Air Force Base is a military airport of the United States Air Force in Alaska . The airfield is located southeast of Fairbanks and was named after Carl Ben Eielson . The most important units at the air base are the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing of the US Air Force, which is subordinate to the 11th Air Force on the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson , and the 168th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard . The 168th Squadron is assigned to carry out air refueling and is equipped with Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers .
F-16s are currently stationed here. These are to be replaced at least in part by two F-35A squadrons from 2020 .
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster , a WC-135 Constant Phoenix of the 45th Reconnaissance Squadron was temporarily stationed at Eielson Air Force Base.
