Cargolux is a Luxembourg cargo airline based in Sandweiler and based at Luxembourg Airport .
history
Foundation and first years
Cargolux was founded in 1970 by the Icelandic Loftleiðir , the Swedish forwarding company Salén Shipping Company and the Luxembourg company Luxair . The flight operations started with a Canadair CL-44 , the first flight led to Hong Kong . By 1972 the fleet had grown to five CL-44s. Due to the growing demand for faster transportation, the first jets went into service in 1973 with the Douglas DC-8 .
The jumbo age began at Cargolux in 1979. The first Boeing 747-200 was put into service. In November 1993, Cargolux was the first airline in the world to put the 747-400F into service. In 2005 Cargolux carried 644,613 tons of freight in international traffic . It was able to achieve sales of 1.446 billion US dollars and a profit of over 89 million US dollars.
Financial problems in 2009
For the 2009 financial year, General Director Ulrich Ogiermann expected a "three-digit million loss". Due to the losses forecast for 2009, a reorganization of the ownership structure and a capital increase of at least $ 100 million were planned. Revenue finally fell in 2009 compared to the previous year by 34 percent and was 1.3 billion US dollars; the yield decreased by 26 percent.
As announced, the shares of SAirGroup were taken over by the other shareholders, as the legal successor of the Swiss company Swissair was in bankruptcy. The Luxembourg state temporarily became a shareholder with 23 million US dollars and also granted a credit line of 100 million euros . After the restructuring, only Luxair, BIP Investment Partners , the Luxembourg savings bank Spuerkeess - BCEE, the state holding company SNCI and the investment fund Lux-Avantage remained as other owners .
On February 25, 2010 the renewal of the collective agreement was signed single-handedly by the representatives of the LCGB . Labor Minister Nicolas Schmit has not recognized the collective agreement as such. In response to pressure from the OGBL , the collective agreement was improved.
Since 2010
In June 2011 the CEO of Qatar Airways announced that he wanted to acquire 35% of Cargolux shares for 150–200 million euros . With this, Qatar Airways wanted to catch up with its competitors Etihad Airways and Lufthansa in the air freight business and at the same time expand its freight offer. On 19 and 21 September 2011 Cargolux was as a worldwide launch customer for two new cargo aircraft of type Boeing 747-8F obtained, but three days before it was canceled due to unspecified problems with Cargolux. The handover finally took place a few weeks later.
As the company announced on December 9, 2011, Ulrich Ogiermann, Special Advisor, and Robert Van de Weg, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing, have pleaded guilty to the US authorities in anti-cartel proceedings for fixing prices.
At the beginning of 2012, Richard Forson, who had previously been Chief Financial Officer of Qatar Airways from 2003 to 2006, replaced David Arendt as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President. On November 17, 2012, Qatar Airways withdrew from Cargolux, as did Albert Wildgen, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In January 2013, the shares in Qatar Airways were taken over by the Luxembourg state and Paul Helminger was nominated as Chairman of the Board of Directors. In March 2013, Luxair announced that Cargolux was jointly responsible for the poor financial situation of the parent company through the necessary capital increase of 100 million euros. Luxair took a share of 43 million euros in line with its shares in Cargolux. Afterwards, a new strategic partner was sought, which was found in the Chinese HNCA. As of January 15, 2014, the latter took a 35% stake in Cargolux. In this agreement, a so-called “dual hub strategy” was agreed between the Luxembourg location and the Chinese Zhengzhou airport .
On February 14, 2014, Cargolux ordered an additional 747-8F from Boeing . The total number of aircraft ordered was 14.
In 2015, Cargolux generated a net profit of $ 49 million.

- On December 2, 1970, a Canadair CL-44 ( aircraft registration TF-LLG ) crashed on the flight from Tehran to Dhaka shortly before landing at Dhaka-Tejgaon Airport . The cause was a locking of the Gust Lock during flight, which made it impossible to control the machine. Four people on board and three on the ground were killed in the crash (see also the Cargolux accident in 1970 ) .
