George Parks Highway
The George Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3) is a major road in the US state of Alaska , which connects the Glenn Highway north of Anchorage with Fairbanks in the interior over a length of 520 km . The original name of the road, completed in 1971, was Anchorage-Fairbanks Highway . In 1975 it was renamed to its current name in honor of George Alexander Parks , a former governor of Alaska .
The George Parks Highway runs parallel to the Alaska Railroad for long stretches . It is the main link between Anchorage and Fairbanks, the two largest cities in Alaska, as well as the only road connection to Denali National Park and the main route into the Matanuska - Susitna Valley northeast of Anchorage.
The kilometering of the highway begins at the southern end with the milepost for mile 35, as the 35 miles from downtown Anchorage to the junction of the George Parks Highway off the Glenn Highway near Palmer is included.

After the junction from the Glenn Highway, the George Parks Highway first leads a few kilometers to the west before turning north along the Talkeetna Mountains . It follows the Susitna River from about the junction with the Hatcher Pass Road and from Talkeetna the Chulitna River . It passes Denali to the west and runs parallel to the Nenana River from Cantwell . The entrance to Denali National Park is at kilometer 382. At Nenana , 86 km before Fairbanks, the highway crosses the Tanana River and turns north-west. In Fairbanks, the Richardson Highway continues towards Delta Junction and the Steese Highway to Circle on the Yukon .
