The Nenana River is a 230 km long left tributary of the Tanana River in Alaska .

Its catchment area includes part of the southern slopes of the eastern Alaska range and the southern Tanana Valley. The Nenana River has its origin on the Nenana Glacier southwest of Mount Deborah . The river initially flows in a westerly direction. He later turns north and cuts the Alaska Range. It forms the eastern border of Denali National Park . The Alaska Railroad and George Parks Highway from Anchorage to Fairbanks run parallel to the Nenana River for about 160 km . In the village of Nenana , the Nenana River finally flows into the Tanana River. The catchment area covers about 8000 km². The river is mainly fed by melt water from the glaciers. The months June to August are consequently the most draining of the year.

In 1885, Lieutenant Henry T. Allen of the US Army explored the river and initially named it Cantwell River after Lieutenant John C. Cantwell , who had explored the Kobuk River the year before . In 1898, WJ Peters and AH Brooks of the United States Geological Survey reported that the native Indians would name the river Tutlut . Nenana , the name of the river used today, comes from the language of the Tanana Indians.
