McKinley Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Denali Borough in Alaska in the United States . The area is on the George Parks Highway at the entrance to Denali National Park . This is home to Denali , the highest mountain on the North American continent at 6,194 meters .
history
The creation of jobs in Denali National Park and the tourism associated with the park contributed significantly to the settlement of the area. McKinley Park is mainly inhabited during the summer months, during the high season of Mount McKinley tourism. Only a few residents live in the place all year round. Denali National Park is open all year round, but a bus service is only offered from May to mid-September. The hotel in the area and almost all visitor centers are closed during the winter months.
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) McKinley Park CDP had 142 inhabitants on a land area of 452.2 km². The mean age was 41.0 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 27,255 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 11.5% of the population had their income below the poverty line (US national average: 12.4%). 27.5% of the population are of German , 19.7% Irish - and 16.9% are of English descent.
Economy and Infrastructure
Denali National Park, the Toklat Ranger Station, buses, hotels, lodges, restaurants, guided rafting tours and other tourist activities offer work opportunities in the high season. Year-round employment is provided by a nearby coal mine, an electricity company and the school district. There is no state school in the town itself. Medical care is provided by the Healy Health Clinic in Healy , among others . The area is connected to Anchorage and Fairbanks by the George Parks Highway . There are three runways available for air traffic in Denali National Park . In addition, the US Park Service operates a runway in McKinley Park. Buses run into the area from Anchorage and Fairbanks. Shuttle buses in McKinley Park offer tours of the national park. Air and helicopter tours are also offered in town .
