The Tanana River ( 'tænənɑː ) is a 1060 kilometer long left tributary of the Yukon River in the US state of Alaska , which flows into the Yukon River at Tanana . The word Tanana means “mountain river” in the Athapaskan language .

The river forms north of the Wrangell Mountains in the Interior from the confluence of the Chisana and Nabesna Rivers . It flows northeast first and then makes a turn northwest through Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge . There the Alaska Highway runs along the shore. In central Alaska , the river forms a swamp region known as the Tanana Valley . In this region the Nenana River and Kantishna River flow into the river.

Ice bet "Nenana Ice Classics"

The Tanana River with the wooden frame for the Nenana Ice Classics 2008

Since 1917 an "ice bet", the "Nenana Ice Classics", has been held on the Tanana River every winter. To do this, a wooden frame is frozen on the river and connected to a tower clock with a rope. As soon as the ice breaks and the frame floats away, the clock stops and marks the time when the ice melted. The earliest date for the ice melt to date was April 14, 2019. The previous record date was April 20 and was only hit twice in 1940 and 1998. The latest date was May 20th.

The Tanana ice is melting at the level of the town of Nenana on the 64th parallel, an average of 5.5 days earlier than it was in 1917. The ice bet thus provides important evidence of global warming .
