Tanana is a town in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the interior of Alaska . It is located about 3 km west of the confluence of the Tanana River in the Yukon and 210 km west of Fairbanks.
history
Due to its location on two large rivers, the place was an important trading point for Koyukon and Tanana Athabasques long before the first European contacts . In 1880, a trading post of the Alaska Commercial Company was established 20 km downriver from what is now Harper's Station . The following year, Church of England missionaries established a mission station 12 km downstream. A school and an infirmary were built between 1887 and 1900. In 1898 Fort Gibbon was established to maintain the telegraph line between Fairbanks and Nome near Tanana.
Gold prospectors who were on the Klondike River in the Yukon because of the gold rush left the area around 1906. In 1923, Fort Gibbon was abandoned. During the Second World War , an air base was set up not far from Tanana, which was used as a refueling station for aircraft that were used under the lending and leasing law .
A new hospital was built in 1949, the management of which was transferred to the US Public Health Service in the 1950s . In 1961 Tanana received city rights .
The Native Village of Tanana is a state-recognized community of native Alaskans in Tanana. 81.5% of the inhabitants of the village are indigenous people or their descendants.
The place gained fame among other things through the Discovery Channel series Yukon Men - Survival in Alaska , which is broadcast in the German-speaking area on DMAX .
