The Gerstle River is a 70 km long left tributary of the Tanana River in the interior of Alaska .
The river is fed by the Gerstle Glacier at an altitude of around 850 m in the northern Alaska range . The Gerstle River flows in a northeast direction. After 20 km the river leaves the mountains and reaches the upstream plain. The Alaska Highway crosses the river. This turns to the northwest for the last few kilometers and finally flows into the Tanana River 28 km east of Delta Junction .
The river was named in 1885 by Lieutenant Henry T. Allen after Lewis Gerstle, chairman of the Alaska Commercial Company .
