Donald Martiny, Werk Lule I (2014)

Donald Martiny (* 1953 in Schenectady , New York ) is an American artist. He is a representative of Abstract Expressionism .

Life

Donald Martiny studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1977 to 1980 . From 1980 to 1983 he was a student at the Art Students League of New York . In parallel, he attended courses at New York University on the subject of art. From 2007 to 2009 he continued his education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts . He lives and works in Chapel Hill , North Carolina .

In 2015 Donald Martiny received a grant as Artist in Residence from the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts in New Berlin, New York and was represented in the annual artist exhibition there. Also in 2015, Donald Martiny was commissioned to manufacture two large works for the One World Trade Center , which are permanently on display there. Martiny was also active as a lecturer, u. a. at Cornell University and the Ackland Museum of Art . There he conducted a public conversation about the painter Hans Hofmann in 2016 as part of an exhibition of his works.

Donald Martiny calls himself a gestural abstractionist (German: gestural abstractionist ). In the English-speaking world, this describes a method in which the painter applies the paint to an object:

"The idea was that the artist would physically act out his inner impulses, and that something of his emotion or state of mind would be read by the viewer in the resulting paint marks."

"The idea was that the artist physically live out his inner impulses and that the viewer reflects something of his emotions or his state of mind in the resulting paint jobs."

- Tate Galleries

Martiny himself describes his work as follows:

“My paintings are actual authentic gestures. These brushstrokes are very much me and I want to be present in the works as honestly and authentically as I can be. They are a record of my physicality at a specific point in time. "

“My pictures are real authentic gestures. These brushstrokes are very much me and I want to be as honest and authentic as possible in the works. They are a record of my physicality at a certain point in time. "

- Isabel Wong : Asia Tatler: “Art Talk…”

In Germany this painting technique is called action painting and belongs to abstract expressionism . Martiny does not paint on canvases or rectangular backgrounds. His works are immediately the frozen brushstroke, just as Martiny designed it in his movements. For this, Martiny experimented for years with the texture of the paint, which on the one hand should be liquid enough to reproduce the brushstroke well and at the same time so durable when dry that the work can be attached to the wall without breaking. The finished work is reinforced by an aluminum plate cut to the exact dimensions of the brush stroke as a base. The paintings then look like a relief on the wall.

The paint that Martiny uses is made from a mixture of water-based polymers that are enriched with pigments . Sometimes he stretches this mixture with so-called microbubbles ( gas-filled microbubbles ), which ensure that the color appears light. In contrast to other action painting artists , Martany's works are not just spontaneous. He first creates a small sketch and, if he likes it, he produces the work in ever larger dimensions. He always works on the floor because this situation gives him the greatest freedom in brushstrokes. He makes his own brushes, and sometimes he uses his hands to express all of his current emotions in the work.

He says: " Brushstrokes are dances trapped in paintings " (German: "Brush strokes are dances that are trapped in paintings .")
