Liu Bolin ( Chinese  劉勃麟  /  刘勃麟 , Pinyin Liú Bólín ), (born January 7, 1973 in the east Chinese province of Shandong in the People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese photographer , sculptor and performance artist.

Life

Liu attended the Shandong Art Institute and graduated with a BA in 1995 . In 2001 he completed his sculpture training at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with an MFA .

Liu's first exhibitions followed in 1999 and 2001 in the Chinese "province". He then settled in Beijing's artists' district Suo Jia Cun , which was demolished in November 2005 by city authorities due to an alleged lack of building permits. After that event, Liu began international recognition with exhibitions in his Hiding in the City series , which were shown in Beijing, France , the United States and Italy . In this series of photos, the artist adapts to the background so that his person and the background structure merge into one another in the photographs of these performances, for example the national flag of the People's Republic, a construction fence in Beijing or graffiti in the city. In June 2011 he adapted himself to the background in various places in New York City , for example he posed in front of the cop on Wall Street in Manhattan .

Liu lives and works today (2011) in Beijing.
