Edgar Diehl (born April 29, 1950 in Sprendlingen ) is a German painter , artist , author and curator . He is a representative of Concrete Art .

life and work

Edgar Diehl studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin from 1970 to 1972 . He then devoted himself to studying painting and art theory (until 1978) at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under Raimer Jochims , who made him a master student in 1978 . Diehl lives and works in Wiesbaden .

Diehl reports in detail about his development as an artist in his book Color Times . He writes about his youth: “My career aspiration was always a visual artist. I just had never dared to say it. ”And refers to his bourgeois origin, to whom such“ crazy things ”were alien. He reports vividly about his art studies with Raimer Jochims and his impulses for his development. When asked: “[…] how much color is necessary to make it tangible?” He comes to the conclusion that the stronger the color, the quieter the form, and talks about his great love for landscape painting : “For a long time I have given up the recognizable forms of landscape, portraits and architecture in favor of working on free color. Nevertheless, inside I am still connected to the theme of the infinite in finitude and claim that my color reliefs today are actually still landscapes. "

He also reports the development away from pure color surface painting towards the design element of the relief in his book: “The relief is so interesting for me because it takes on a bridging position. It lies between image and sculpture, between the second and third dimension. [...] I find seams interesting, the transitions between dimensions and the change in the applicable laws. "

Edgar Diehl was nominated for the International Evard Prize in 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2018 .

In 2019 Edgar Diehl won the Otto Schaffner Prize for Plastic and Sculpture Mörfelden-Walldorf for his work of art Hemingway's suitcase . The three-meter-high sculpture made of perforated sheet steel gives the viewer surprising insights and visual references when circling.
