Sculptures in the Park is an open-air exhibition of sculptures that takes place every August in the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf (Groß-Gerau district). The works of art are set up or installed during the six-week show in the park at the Bürgerhaus Mörfelden (Parkstrasse) with its old trees. In the course of its existence, both established and younger artists have exhibited their works here. Participants included a. Werner Pokorny , ER Nele , Vera Röhm , Ottmar Hörl , Reinhard Buxel , Gotthelf Schlotter and Kai Richter .

The sculpture park mostly shows a colorful mixture of figurative art, abstract art, objects and installations. Classical sculpture in steel and bronze is usually represented as well as works made of wood, ceramic and stone. More unusual materials such as bamboo, concrete or nylon tights refer to forms of expression in contemporary sculpture. Sculptures in the Park is under the patronage of the action artist Ottmar Hörl , President of the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. The vernissage attracts several hundred visitors from the region every year.

price

The Sculptures in the Park competition awards an artist with a prize every year. A solo exhibition in the municipal gallery Mörfelden-Walldorf in the following year is associated with the award. The jury consists of two gallery owners and two artists from Frankfurt am Main and Mörfelden-Walldorf. The jury also selects the participating artists from the applications in advance.

Since 2019 the jury prize has been called the Otto Schaffner Prize - in honor of Otto Schaffner, the co-founder of 'Sculptures in the Park', who died in July 2019.

Supporting program

An extensive supporting program takes place during the sculpture exhibition, including a children's art weekend with sculpture workshops for children, an evening performance and, of course, guided tours.

Organizer and funding

The event is organized by the voluntary municipal gallery Mörfelden-Walldorf and by the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf in cooperation with the regional association of galleries in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. Is sponsored sculptures in the park by the Cultural Summer Südhessen e. V., an association of five districts in southern Hesse (Bergstrasse, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Groß-Gerau, Odenwald, Offenbach) and the City of Science Darmstadt, which promotes cultural events in the region.

history

It is one of the oldest regular sculpture exhibitions in Germany , alongside the Blickachsen in Bad Homburg.
