Reinhard Buxel (* 1953 in Amshausen , Gütersloh district; † August 3, 2016 ) was a German sculptor .

Life

From 1981 to 1987, Buxel studied sculpture at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig , and from 1987 as a master student with Emil Cimiotti . Since 1983 Buxel has participated in numerous sculpture symposiums , including those in France and Japan. From 1987 to 2001 Buxel taught stone carving at the College of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. Buxel lived and worked in Salzkotten (Paderborn district).

At first glance, Buxel's sculptures are reminiscent of prehistoric, cultic stone formations; the second glance reveals the rational concept: They are always precisely assembled from stone blocks that Buxel selects from individual stones found. He processes it in a few, clear cuts so that all the stones will later join together to form the shape conceived by the sculptor. With Buxel it is exactly the opposite of that with Ulrich Rückriem's sculptures , who start from the whole, divide it or cut it up and finally put the parts back together again to form a whole.

The sculptures by Buxel draw their tension from the interplay of the individual stone parts to create a uniform expression that mostly refers to elementary things such as a table, a gate or a cube. This effect is reinforced by the fact that the sides of the stone blocks worked by the artist mainly point inwards, and in some cases are no longer visible to the viewer after they have been joined, while Buxel leaves the individual outer sides of the stone blocks largely unworked.

“The craftsmanship is to be recognized and recognized as an important part of this artistic work, but it is literally enclosed in the inaccessible interior of the sculpture, while fracture surfaces dominate on the outside. Despite the weight and size of the sculptures, this creates the impression of balancing acts between nature and spirit. Nature is integrated into an artistic concept that does not rob her of her voice, but gives it a new independence beyond all coincidences ”(Lothar Romain, 1989).
