Gotthelf Schlotter (born December 24, 1922 in Hildesheim ; † August 4, 2007 in Darmstadt ) was a German sculptor who gained reputation and fame primarily through his animal bronzes.

Life

He was the son of the wood sculptor and trade teacher Heinrich Schlotter (1886–1964) and his wife Irene geb. Noack (1898-1987). He was a younger brother of the painter Eberhard Schlotter .

From 1938 to 1941 Schlotter did an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor with his father and received training at the arts and crafts school in Hildesheim. Then he was in military service and was seriously wounded in Stalingrad during World War II . After 1945, he lived first in Bargfeld Lower Saxony and put in Celle carpentry join exam , but then studied at the Art Academy in Munich at Lothar Otto and Karl Knappe . From 1951 he worked in Darmstadt. In the same year his brother Eberhard Schlotter also followed to Darmstadt.

In 1955 he joined the New Darmstadt Secession and was its 1st chairman from 1967 to 1970. Schlotter made numerous trips abroad.

Among his bronzes, which are distributed in many museums and public locations, the best known is probably the large "bird fountain" in front of the Walsroder bird park ; The sculpture "Kranich mit dem Stein" for the " Kranichsteiner Literature Prize " also comes from him.

Gotthelf Schlotter died in August 2007 at the age of 84 after a brief serious illness in his house in Darmstadt.
